Amp for K-horns
 

Ok guys, my father just purchased a pair of '74 klipschhorns yesterday (105db sensitivity). The guy he bought them from had a stack of 2 on either side of the room and had a 100w SS amp ran to each of the 4 speakers. He convinced my dad that he needs 100w per channel. These speakers are among the most sensitive in existence. I keep trying to tell him to buy a 10 watt tube amp or something similar. If k-horns can't run off 10 watts nothing can so why would there be so many options for such low wattage amps. What would you suggest for him the best amp under $2000 for the k-horns?

Most of the Klipschorn elite's run SET Amps. there are alot of different SET Amps to choose from.

So he should be able to run a 10 watt tube amp without loss of bass etc over what he heard at the sellers house on cheap 100w SS amp? I am pretty sure I know the answers to most these questions but I am planning to have him read this thread once I get some of the knowledge bass here :)

Anyone heard quicksilver horn amps? I was contemplating trying to talk him into those, a cayin integrated, or primaluna integrated

I think 10w should be fine. I have my Khorns hooked up to a 75w tube amp. But if my amp meters are correct I can't tell you the last time I used more then 3w. I listen at .5w most of the time. My uncle uses a 30w tube amp with his Khorns and he rocks the house. When I pull up to the main gate of his farm it often sounds like Woodstock.

To update this, dad ended up buying a Caying A-55TP. Its a heck of a little integrated. I was super impressed by it and i would recommend anyone looking for a sub 2k integrated check them out.

There are a couple of schools on Klipschorn. One would be the vintage tube route, McIntosh MC 30 for example. Another school would be something like an Accuphase Class A 50 watt per channel amp. Super fast and super clean. Being a Mcintosh guy, for early SS sound I would go with a MC 502 50 watts per channel with power guard to help protect your tweeters for old school. Another choice would be one of Mcintoshs integrated pre-amp- amps. Something like a restored MA 6200. Or just for an amp the MHA 100 50 watts a channel basic amp, that is also designed to drive the new low impedance head phones that are so popular now days. Ayre and Krell make some really fast amps, but they can be a little on the sizzly side, IMHO.

Hmm.. the MHA 100 might be the most accessible, that is if you can get one fresh of the line.

Amp for Khorns
 

I have tried many amps for my Khorns, notably Welborne 300b Laurels (6 watt),
Decware 6 watt(bridged for mono), Wright PP 25 watt, Welborne 2A3 (3.5 watt),
etc., but I haven't swapped out my Welborne StarChief 45's (1.5 watt) once I heard them.
The low power SET tube amps are addictive with high efficiency Klipsch Heritage speakers. Most Khorns owners find that once they try Single Ended Triode amps, they never go back to anything else. The soundstage, clarity, and holographic imaging are incredible.

When I was in my residency, one of my professors had the K-horns in a very large room (I'd say at least 600 square feet with about 12 foot ceilings) driven by a pair of MC275's running in mono. They were REALLY good.
