Very nice! Always wanted to hear these.

they will be driven by Vitus SM 011 power amps, and Vitus MasterPiece dac and transport. Cables - Siltech triple crown. |
Very nice. Those feet look like you should be able to move them remotely. What a sight that would be.
|
Just read the review in the latest Stereophile magazine. They are $152k here in Australia, but I still want a pair.
|
pweg, did you buy them in the USA?
If so, are they the grey ones? |
no - I'm in australia
and yes - grey bass drivers |
sorry my bad
walnut front , black gloss, black drivers |
I look forward to this!
|
Nice......wow. I can only imagine the sonic heaven you will be in
|
Congratulations Pweg!
You have a great time in front of you, prepare yourself for the highest level of musicality and Fidelity. Mine Coltrane 3's are now six months old and it is still a jaw dropping experience listening and comparing them to the Tad E1's they replaced. Of course they should outperform them for three times the money but in my opinion they easily run around the R1's too. Earlier I haven't been a big fan of the Coltrane's (too anemic) but now it is a much more accomplished loudspeaker. Stbo |
thx Stbo
looking forward to getting them - not looking forward to moving them  |
These are wonderful speakers. I heard them at AXPONA 2016 with CAT electronics - very musical.
|
Don't worry at all about unpacking, installing and moving them, they are on wheels in the flightcases. Just tilt the flightcases up, roll them out and then sit back and enjoy. I promise you don't even need a helping hand.

oh - great news thx
its such a pain in this hobby that the higher up you go the more damage you do to your back - literally |
@pweg, when you get a chance, can you talk about the differences in sound between the Coltrane 3 and the Coltrane Tenor's you had before?
I am thinking of these two particular speakers and you are probably the perfect person to talk about them! The Coltrane 3 would be too big for my room, so I am heavily leaning towards either the Coltrane Tenor or the new Martin Mingus Quintet. The Coltrane 3 and Mingus Quintet are using ALL Accuton Cell Concept drivers and First Order Crossovers. The Tenor uses a second order crossover. I currently own Bird 2 which also use the same second order crossover. Your thoughts would be extremely valuable as a user :) AND CONGRATS! I absolute love Marten speakers and simply have not heard better for my listening tastes and sensibilities. Cheers! |
we want pictures!
|
happy to compare the tenors to the 3's. Have been told they are departing sweden early next week.
I'm actually very interested to see if i can hear an audible difference in the types of crossovers the 2 speakers use. |

C3's arrived yesterday afternoon so read all comments in that light
First - the packaging was excellent. Each speaker comes in its own flight case on castors. The speaker itself sits on castors in the flight case and once you up end the case little ramps appear and the speaker simply rolls off - brilliant. Second - they appear better finished than just about anything I've ever bought in HiFi. Everything comes in cases inside the transport containers. The finish of he wood on the front and the chrome highlights is fabulous. Compared to the Tenors that these replaced the C3's are much bigger. i had a listen last night but was too impressed with the sound - they sounded tight and a little thin. this morning they are sounding fleshier and fuller, the midrange is filling out and treble appears out of nowhere - like there isn't even a tweeter to reproduce the sounds. the biggest change in the sound from Tenors, apart from fuller and more grounded bass is the soundstage and imaging. The vertical, and front to back imaging is much better than the Tenors...... And it sounds strange given how big they are, but they are harder to localise/hear compared with the Tenors. They throw up this huge soundstage and simply disappear. ill write back some more thoughts as they break in |
Thanks for posting this.
I am currently auditioning the Marten Mingus Quintet's my room and am also hearing these qualities. The disappearance act in these First Order cell concept drivers is very uncanny. Now the Mingus uses the 5" midrange and tweeter from the Marten Coltrane Supreme 2. The Coltrane 3 has a 7" version. I really really like the midrange weight that the Tenors have. Let me know if you feel the Coltrane 3 midrange fills out closer towards that Tenor midrange you are undoubtedly familiar with. I get that weighted sound in my Bird 2 as well. So far, the Mingus nor the Coltrane 2 Supreme's have that tonal richness I'm accustomed to.c, I am going to have to play with some tube rolling, vibration control etc. to get the mids to fill out like I want. I am looking for bloom, weight and tonal density that the second generation Marten speakers have (Bird 2, Coltrane Tenors, Coltrane II etc.), yet seem to be somewhat elusive to these new cell concept speakers. At any rate, I am really looking forward to your comments as you are especially coming out fresh from the Tenors. I will be making a decision between the Tenors and the Mingus Quintet in the near future :) Congrats again! Here is are my Bird 2's and now the Marten Mingus in their place on loan. https://c3.staticflickr.com/8/7218/2...5e774040_b.jpg https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7324/2...2ec17d74_b.jpg |
Shaz - how old are the Mingus u have ?
at this stage the midranges are i think similar between C3 and Tenor. The difference in weight i think is in the upper bass. its funny, the sound is similar but also different |
also, my dealer said to me that he heard the Mingus at Munich just recently and said that Mingus sounded full and composed and was almost as good as the Tenor, but fell down slightly with its ability to resolve finer details.
hope that helps... |
This is the same pair that was shown in Munich and then shipped out to the SHOW Newport here in California.
So they are very well broken in. You are absolutely right...it is the upper bass weight that I am looking for. This black finish of the speaker is mesmerizing though...with the stainless steel surround around the midrange and tweeter, it looks drop dead stunning! |
my gut feel is that you would find the Tenors a little lean...... certainly not bass shy but not as rich as the C3 and also the Mingus
Shaz - what about the walnut finish? Ive got walnut with black drivers - looks awesome |
pweg, can you post some pictures of your Coltrane 3's?
If I go the Mingus route, I would PROBABLY pick up the Piano Gloss walnut finish, though this black gloss finish is looking amazing with my black and silver electronics. This is the Piano Gloss walnut finish: http://www.my-hiend.com/leoyeh2/2016a/SGH_0709mm.jpg http://www.theaudiobeat.com/highend2016/p3/marten_1.jpg |
lol - can u tell me how to - happy to
|
I think the way to do it is to upload to a flickr account or any picture service. Then just link the picture here with using this icon here http://www.audioaficionado.org/image...nsertimage.gif

Here you go :) What a STUNNING setup!
What are the dimensions of your room? I see the speakers are so close together, I'm guessing they are STILL doing their disappearing act? I love the walnut finish you have...it is a matte walnut. http://i1048.photobucket.com/albums/...psripw4s8r.jpg |
Hi Shaz
my room is very small - its called the whiskey room and is just for me. Dimensions are 12'6" by 14'. they are the biggest speakers you can realistically put into that room :), and they are about 1.5m apart and they totally disappear yes - matte walnut and then black lacquer over carbon fibre. For their size they are very light - about 94kg each |
Wow! Congrats, very envious.
|
Any more thoughts?
|
Sorry guys just in Siciliy escaping the Australian winter so no more thoughts
|
back from hols and just listening now
exceptional transparency and a smoothness probably due to the fuller bottom end when compared to the tenors. Also, despite the increase in size they seem to disappear more readily. the other thing I've noticed, when using Vitus amps u can switch between class a/b and class a. Since I've had the Coltrane3's I'm forgetting to switch the amps to class a |
I picked up the Coltranes a year or so ago. I have the Ayre stack and stuff was sounding a bit soft. The Martens are so stinking fast that they definetly helped the Ayre gear out :)
|
absolutely georgeus, it was one of my shortlisted that i want to have for my speaker upgrade but end up with something else due to budget limit, congrats pweg !
i am based in australia also, i believe you might have the only Coltrane 3 here. |
