IRS Beta
Hello folks. I am getting ready to rebuild my beloved Betas and I am looking for some advice as far as what brand of Caps and wire to use. Thanks for any information.

Hi, Paul McGowan of PS Audio may be able to offer some help. He rebuilt his Infinity Reference speakers.
I experimented with several capacitors for the passive x-over on my RS1b's and settled with Mundorf. Cables also changed from Monster to VdH. Hope this helps. Allan |
Hi, When we worked on rebuilding the crossovers for our IRS V's, Arnie Nudell recommended the following list of components to us. I would suspect there may be some similarity it what you should use:
· Mundorf MKP capacitors · Goertz foil inductors for the tweeters and midrange low pass filters · Jantzen Permite core inductor for the midrange high pass filter · Metal film precision resistors, using multiple resistors instead of single large wire-wound cement filled type · Metal film resistors and a 12 position switch instead of the rheostats Best of luck with your project. The change was a big improvement for us. Larry |
Should the Wondercaps be replaced?

I would speak with Bill Legall, owner of Millersound. Bill is a consummate craftsman and has experience with rebuilding the planar drivers on Infinity speakers. When I last spoke with him, he owned a couple of pair of IRS V's.

Another Beta owner who would like to know!
Was playing with my setup and spectrum analyzer last week. Trying to cure huge dead spot in the spectrum around 70 Hz (bad room acoustics). While playing, I discovered the EMIT and EMIM controls weren't working. I'm going to get some replacements rather than cleaning. Could only find wire wound types (5 ohm 5 watt). Anyone know where to get one of the standoffs for IRS Beta woofer grills? They look the same as those used on the other cabinet, just with the addition of a bushing. Were they used on any of the other speakers? How do you remove them from the grill (do they unscrew or pull off)? If I can get one out, I'll try to scan and 3d print them, just want to make sure I'm not going to break anything when attempting to remove (they're all very tight). ... and the foam inside the passive crossover box has deteriorated on mine. Probably the same for everyone as well. Time to pull it out and replace before it becomes a sticky mess! Thanks! Rob |
CR500... Welcome to AA!

Finally got the new potentiometers to replace EMIT / SEMIT level controls. Sound is back to normal.
Disassembled one of the original pots and could see wear. Tried cleaning them up and they improved but not enough. Then tried moving the wipers to sweep a different section of the wound wire and flew too close to the sun ... killed it. Replaced the four of them today. The one broken standoff came out from the frame (prior to my ownership). It looks as if there is a plastic part still installed in the frame, almost as if it was a separate part (maybe the standoff was glued to this remaining piece - it doesn't look broken). I'll try to take a photo of it tomorrow. Are they unobtanium? Thanks Rob |
You can try contacting Bill LeGall at Miller Sound (http://www.millersound.net) and see if he has any he would be willing to sell you.
He specializes in repairing the Infinity IRS line & owns a pair of Infinity IRS V. He had a good supply of parts. I brought my IRS Beta woofers there 10(?) years ago to have the foam surrounds replaced & have them dynamically balanced. He did an excellent job, & I recommend him highly. He is a nice guy, but can initially come across as a bit brusque. If you treat him flippantly, he just might "show you the door"... |
Bill is the real deal. He is a world class craftsman.

I'll give him a call about the standoff. He refoamed my woofers almost 10 years ago. Hell of a nice guy. We must have talked for an hour every time I called.
