Anyone else with an MC7106 that hums?

And no, I don’t think it’s because it doesn’t know the words...

Nope. Something is obviously not right. Time to get it on a bench with someone who knows what to do.

McGuyDLF 05-17-2020 03:46 PM

Yeah might have too. It’s not loud obviously but I’ve also done some digging and it appears this occurs quite a bit.

Does it hum when just plugged into the wall with no other connections?

McGuyDLF 05-17-2020 04:43 PM

Yes. Faintly. I can hear it from about 8 feet away. Not loud just a steady hum.

crwilli 05-17-2020 05:23 PM

Maybe others can jump in but I would think that’s not good. It’s not likely going to change with another outlet or being connected to a power conditioner.

McGuyDLF 05-17-2020 05:25 PM

I don’t love it but I know others have had this issue.

Maybe I have just been lucky. I bought mine in Seoul in 1997 and it has never been serviced beyond to change voltage and repair the lights. No hum, dead quiet.

Lucky! It's really not that annoying but just wish it were dead quiet. Just checked with a friend of mine, he has one and his hums - not all the time but often enough that he noticed it did this. I can call my guy at McIntosh Ron Cornelius, he seems to know everything.

You have DC leaking into your mains. Transformers don’t like DC in mains and they buzz/hum when they do. You can measure this with a voltmeter. Some other equipment is causing this. Typically large flat panel displays with switching mode power supplies. You can start unplugging other electronics until the hum goes away to isolate the cause. PS Audio used to have a device called Humbuster which removed DC from the mains. Time to time these show up for sale.
