Apple TV or Fire TV?

My Panasonic TV no longer updates its firmware and as such, is no longer fully functional with Amazon Prime. It do any update any of the new releases. Amazon confirmed that is a Panasonic issue and suggested I buy a Fire TV.

Since I don’t want t buy a new TV, I am starting to think about the Fire TV or an Apple TV.

My predominant (like 98%) use for either will be to stream Netflix or Amazon Prime. The Fire is far cheaper than the Apple TV.

Any suggestions on what I might gain with one over the other?

TIA

Craig

Apple TV or Fire TV?

Craig, although I have two Apple TVs, I think a Roku streaming stick is enough in your case. Reasons: small, no external power, not expensive.

Edit: sorry, it needs external power supply. It’s been a long time since I looked at the back of my TV :)

Are you interested in 4K video and Dolby vision/hdr

And what are your expectations for sound: 5.1, 7.1, Atmos

Not interested in 4K now.

As for sound, I only do 5 channel Dolby Digital sound. Nothing fancy - no subs.

Agree on Roku or firetv. We have all three and the Apple is the worst to use by far (including a crap remote).

Do you own a Sony PS3 or PS4?

Odd - I have the Apple TV 4K, the Xbox One X, the PS4 Pro and various smart TV apps - and invariably the AppleTV 4K looks the best of the lot.

Dolby Vision supported with 4K.. and Atmos on the way. With my less than stellar ADSL connection, I am always surprised how I am getting 4K streams.

Netflix 4K is amazing - and even Amazon Prime's HDR (try The Grand Tour) is spectacular

I would say if you can spend the money, now that Amazon works on Apple, get the Apple TV.

Then I would go for the cheaper option at this point. The Amazon options will work for you.

When you get around to 4K/Dolby Vision and enhanced audio like 7.1/Atmos, then the Apple 4K TV is hard to beat at this time.

I have an Apple 4K TV, Roku Ultra, Nvidia Shield, and Amazon Fire Stick on different TV's and rooms.

Though the remote is different, the Apple 4K TV is the best.

Thanks for the input folks. Which ‘Evil Empire’ do I choose...

I have AMEX miles and think I will use them to get the Apple TV for ‘free’.
