Bowers 700 series

Well it's true, looks like there is a new high performance high value speaker line on the block.

Seems the model designations are:
702s2 = $4500/pr
703s2 = $3500
704s2 = $2500
705s2 = $1250
706s2 = $900
707s2 = $600

Has anyone seen specs or photos yet?

I'm pretty excited for this line... I have the CM10s2 and might move to the 702s2... Though I wonder what the 702 means given there has never been a 702 and the top of the range in the past was a 703s1.

Anyone else excited?

Bowers 700 series

B&W discontinued the 700 series years ago. Interesting to see them reintroduce the series.

I keep picturing a 702s2 with a head... I know it's not possible but that "X 02" designation keeps throwing me off.

I wonder if they're really using the continuum. If they are, seems kind of early to unleash their secret sauce of their 80xd3 series.

They are replacing the CM series. The "700" designation makes more sense in their current lineup of speakers. I heard (from someone at Magnolia, who seemed to know what he was talking about) that the speakers will have the continuum midrange, but not the aerofoil woofers or diamond tweeters, and the enclosure will look the same as the current speakers. From your price list the 704 S2 looks to be a new pricepoint in the lineup.

Info embargoed until September 9.

These will probably sound pretty good for their price points.

I have one CMC2 S2 center channel speaker each in two secondary HT 5.1 systems, along with 700 series in-ceiling speakers (CCM 7.3 three-ways and CCM 7.4 two-ways) and REL S-series subs. Both systems sound very good.

In my study I have a pair of stand-mounted CM6 S2 speakers flanking my desk and driven with a small integrated amp (basically a "computer audio" system that does not actually use the computer). These sound exceptionally good (and I have typically preferred Dynaudio for small stand-mounted speakers).

If the new 700 series use Continuum as rumored I suspect that they will sound very good.

For those we want to see some pictures of the new 700 series (and understand Swedish) :

In the new version of HiFi News B&W has issued a press release with photos along with an ad showing the drivers exploded out of the cabinet to show the details of the new motors.

They have included:
Continuum Midrange FST but in a different basket and magnet assembly
Aerofoil base cone with driver skin of paper versus carbon and sandwich core of EPS versus Syntactic foam (not sure of the benefits from an audio perspective), including different magnet and basket assemblies from 800 series.
Two piece aluminum/carbon tweeter in one piece extrusion sitting on top similar to CM series.

The top of the line 702S2 includes 3 bass drivers (not sure of size probably 6.5 inch).

Should sound good for the money. Will be interesting to see the reviews when they come out.

Email teaser

I received a teaser email from Bowers & Wilkins today. Subject line was:

Studio sound comes home

Image appears to be looking down on a "tweeter on top"

The email suggests the magic date is September 6 (not September 9).

Seems likely that the teaser is referring to the new 700 series.
