What jazz music are you listening to?

Like with the new blues thread, I'd like to learn from you guys about some good jazz albums.
I've been a jazz fan since more than 30 years, and still find it one of the finest arts.
To be witness of the process of creation of the art in the moment itself is a privilege, so going to concerts is a must for jazz lovers.
Good recordings come second, and I'll start with a classic album:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...OL._SS400_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...iL._SS400_.jpg

Horace Silver plays really funky (my 12-year old daughter starts dancing spontaneously here :D).
Art Blakey gets a lot of room for solos, and he does them with his usual fire.
The bass players are Gene Ramey, Curly Russell and Percy Heath.
Recording quality is reasonable (recorded '52-'53).

Another absolute classic album!
Sonny Rollins in blood form.
Max Roach, one of the finest drummers of all times.
Tommy Flanagan, powerful yet subtle.
Doug Watkins, delivering fine bass support.
Good remastering.

Bart...I will post a list of some of my favs tonight

RoadDawgWest 01-11-2012 05:13 PM

Bart,
I'm glad you started this thread. I have been wanting something like this for sometime, but just looked through the other threads searching for the Jazz material.

I want second Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band with another listing. I purchased "That's How We Roll" CD in late 2011 and I have been playing it multiple times per week.

18-piece big band. 10-track album of original material except for Rhapsody in Blue. This recording is great in my opinion since you can hear all the different parts of the band. Nothing gets masked over in this recording.

Rollins on one of his best albums.
Horace Silver and Thelonius Monk alternatingly on the piano.
Art Blakey doing a marvelous job again.
And some great solos by Jay Jay Johnson on thrombone.:thumbsup::thumbsup:!!

I bought the SACD at my used music store, near Univ. of Md. It was the only SACD they had in the entire store and they were selling it for $6. Most of the staff didn't even know what an SACD was. Sounds terrific!

Good Thread, I made it a Sticky!

In honor of the new thread,

I'm listening to . . . . . An East Wind LP, recorded - by the Direct Cutting (Direct to Disc) method - 1977 in Los Angeles at Warner Brothers Recording Studios, but produced and issued by Nippon Phonogram, Japan.

The L.A. Four - Going Home

Laurindo Almeida - Guitar
Ray Brown - Bass
Shelly Manne - Drums
Bud Shank - Alto Saxophone, Alto Flute, Flute

http://www.dustygroove.com/images/pr...ghome_101b.jpg

Unbelievable acoustics!

AudioNut 01-11-2012 07:45 PM

So, I guess I'll play another East Wind Direct to Disc Jazz LP

The Great Jazz Trio Direct From LA

http://www.koolkatjazz.com/catalog/i...EWP2210064.JPG

Quote:

Despite a frequent change of supporting players, pianist Hank Jones always produces rewarding sessions when he leads the Great Jazz Trio in a studio date . On the 1977 Great Jazz Trio Direct From L.A. disc made for the Japanese label East Wind, premier sidemen Ron Carter and Tony Williams are on hand. Right away Jones signals that he is in a playful mood, using Tchaikovsky's "Arabian Dance" (from The Nutcracker) to introduce and close a cooking rendition of "A Night in Tunisia." The treatment of "'Round About Midnight" is more straightforward, though Jones' style adds an elegant touch. His off-kilter introduction to the well-traveled "Satin Doll" keeps the song fresh. He transforms "My Funny Valentine" into a brisk loping waltz, with Carter and Williams providing imaginative support. If there's a bone to pick with this well-recorded LP, it is the miserly length of just 29 minutes.

Japanese vinyl releases are premium quality pressings, much sought after by audiophiles and collectors alike. In the 1960s Toshiba pioneered top quality red vinyl pressings using their trademark Ever-Clean process this utilized a special ingredient intended to prevent the build-up of static electricity on the vinyl. Japanese pressings are synonymous with quality - the vinyl shines like no other vinyl - everything about their releases feels special. When US audiophile label Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab first released their series of high quality pressings the records were manufactured in Japan. The sonic quality of Japanese pressings is considered to be among the best in the world

Currently listening to classical, but will post soon when I switch back again.

Acoustic Sounds says the next round of 45 RPM Verve reissues ships Friday. I'm a subscriber so I should have them next week. Ella Fitzgerald, "Like Someone in Love") and "Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson" on tap. I also signed up for their Prestige Mono reissue series, and that starts shipping next month.

Listening to . . . A MFSL SACD

Patricia Barber - Companion

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

This album starts with "The Beat Goes On" on which Patricia Barber plays a mean Hammond B-3 organ - This is my favorite of her albums - good performance, excellent sound quality. I really like the B-3 which shows up throughout the album.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg

This is the only Sanborn recording I have on CD...my other four or five are LPs. I've really grown to like him...little harder hitting than some sax players. The opening track of this album has some very nice percussive beats which are sounding particularly nice on the system, this evening.

I'd also like to say thank you, Bart, for starting this thread...

Listening to . . . Tim Weisberg - Dreamspeaker

An LP recorded by A&M Records 39 years ago in 1973 - and regularly played by me ever since!

Quote:

Tim Weisberg (born 1943, Hollywood, California) is an American jazz/rock fusion flutist, composer, producer, and vocalist. In high school, at his first music class, because his last name was at the end of the alphabet, he was last to pick an instrument. All that was left was the flute and the bassoon. He picked the flute because it was easier to carry, and because the flute section was all girls

I'll second this one. I think this recording may feature the most well recorded bass I've ever heard.

The lower bass notes from Ray Brown's upright bass are bottomless on this LP. Will test your woofers!
