Luxman PD-171A Turntable

I am seriously considering this TT. Just wondering if any AA members own one and could share their impressions.

PHC1 02-04-2018 11:58 AM

Greg, it is unlikely that you will find much feedback on a Luxman turntable. For the money, chances are there is perhaps more performance to be had going with the usual brands focused on such products, of course with diminishing returns taken into consideration. I’m sure the Luxman is a good turntable and those that do own them with the rest of Luxman gear for obvious “complete system” approach are happy and could not care less if some other turntable sounds a bit better. Much like the McIntosh table, you will find plenty of them with McIntosh owners but probably not one without the rest of the gear.

Luxman was always a DD TT maker. Think they should stick with that. We need a good $7K DD TT.

GreginNH1 02-05-2018 11:18 AM

Thanks Serge and Glenn. I found a few articles on the web. Having seen this TT up-front and personal, it's a beauty.

rnrmf1971 02-05-2018 11:26 AM

Until I got a deal on my current TT, I was fairly confident that I'd end up with the Luxman TT. I think it's gorgeous, convenient, and the reviews are strong.
I was considering the armless version of the TT with an Ortofon arm, perhaps.

Thanks Serge,

For some reason, I had not seen the article. The Luxman is a beauty. With the great trade up program at my local dealer, I don’t think I can go wrong.

I'm sure you will be very, very happy. Especially with what you have planned.

if they can make one better than the Technics at that price point(which I doubt) than yes. As I stated in one of Serge's threads, doing it again, I'd buy this one and call it a day ...............

Here is a good example of diminishing returns in audio. Michael Fremer comparing the SL-1200G to a $120k Continuum Caliburn. Obviously he is vehemently trying to point out the differences in sound but you be the judge...

Too funny! Not far from the truth either.

For what it's worth, I actually did take it seriously and listened carefully through a DAC and headphones and at the end preferred the sound of the Technics to the Caliburn... Lucky me! :D

Maybe more important is your choice of cartridge. What are you thinking?

Currently a Dynavector Karat 17D3. It only has 20 hours on it. Might consider a step up the food chain though.

I took a look at the Technics TT today. Build quality is as good but not better than the Luxman. The arm is the weak point of this table. While I was there I saw the first Acoustic Signature XX to arrive in North America. It’s incredible. This particular one is going to AXPONA in April. More should arrive soon.

Decisions decisions.

No. It’s so new, it’s not even on the AS website yet. It’s very similar to the XXX with a smaller footprint. It’s truly a work of art. I didn’t have my iPhone with me today but will grab a few pics when I go back this weekend.

I took a hard look at the Triple X. It was too big for my liking and very heavy.

I will definitely have to check this out at Axpona.

I’ll start a new thread.

Luxman38 02-12-2019 06:47 PM

Just purchased the Luxman PDA-171A Turntable.:banana:About 2 years ago I was diagnosed w/Type 4 Cancer and I promised myself if I survived I would get something special. This past Friday Febuary 8 I was declared cancer free. On the 10th (My Birthday) I went down to my dealer. Brought a stack of LP's and and ordered it. It's going to be hooked up to my Luxman CL38U-SE and a pair of Aerial 5T's. For me this was a special purchase.

Great news on many fronts! John told me about the TT sale but I didn’t know it was you. May it give you many years of enjoyment!

Luxman38 02-12-2019 07:10 PM

Thanks. I came in from work today and I had a message that the TT was already in. I'm going to stop by Friday to drop off my Linn. That was a speedy delivery.:music:

Thanks for your comments. Over the past few years music has been a real antidote for getting through the tough times. Many times it gave me the emotional lift to keep on going.:music:

Congrats on your new purchase but more importantly congrats on beating the C. Very happy for you. Check out the Analogue Reproductions pressing by QRP.

Congrats on the new TT, and, more important, the surgery. Just went thru surgery for same and now a year of follow-up testing to see how well things went. Had not thought about it, but maybe that's why I sold the VPI and went with a Denon DP-80 last month. Best of luck to us both.

Keep a positive outlook. Today's Cancer recovery is way better than it was in the past.

Luxman38 02-17-2019 09:26 PM

Picked up my Luxman PDA-171A today and all I can say is WoW!!! The folks at Audio Video Therapy did a fantastic job of setting it up. I had to adjust my sub as the bass out of this TT is much stronger and tighter. Love the strobe that allows you to fine tune the speed. Easy to change the cart w/the detachable head. The 15lb platter has two handles you screw in to make it easier to drop in the platter. I'm off tomorrow so tonight will be a long evening of music. Have it hooked up to my Luxman CL38U-SE. Currently using a Dynavector 20xl2L that I used on my Linn. Any suggestions for a future cart in the 1500 to 2K that you can suggest??:music:

Formerly YB-2 02-18-2019 08:22 PM

Nice. Couldn't agree more about the universal headshell. One of the two reasons I've moved from VPI (the other being my preference for DD). Certainly enjoy my Kleos, so the $2K model (Delos?) would seem to be a good choice. Be nice if you could post a pic of your rig.

GreginNH1 03-26-2019 06:49 PM

I decided to add my third Luxman piece to my rig.

I see you have a dampening plate on your integrated. What was the noticeable improvement and any issues with heat and discoloration? I know my 590 can run pretty warm.

GeAllan70 03-26-2019 08:03 PM

Very Nice!!!
