I just picked up a SP14 that has been updated at ARC, and it is the Black Face version. Any thought on this model?
Regards,
Jim

Funny you should mention it. I just saw Stereophile just posted online a review of the SP14 that was published on Jun 15, 1990. It should make for an interesting read (i have not read it yet). Enjoy: Audio Research SP14 preamplifier | Stereophile.com

Jim...congrats on your new SP14  Let us know what you think about it. I am only familiar with ARC's newer gear (from last 5-6 years) which tends to be much more neutral but i would be very interested to get your thoughts on the SP14 once it has had some time to log in some hours in your system.

I heard one recently compared to an LS 25 MK2 I had before upgrading myself, and was impressed. You should have lots of fun.

I owned a black SP-14 before selling it and buying a black LS25 MKII! Loved the phono section on the 14.Had it set up for an Oracle TT with Zeta arm and Koetsu black cartridge.I also used a Cal audio labs Tercet for the line in to compare both formats. Vinyl and Digital sounded so good.:music:

I've no experience with it but I've always had a lot of respect for ARC and the ARC units I've heard were superb. This one looks very nice indeed!

Well It is now in house, and I'm very pleased with the upgrade in my system. The bass has more definition and the whole presentation seems more effortless and in control. Great sound stage and imaging as well. Very impressive!

Jim

Jim.......Good score. The Audio Research SP14 is a nice hybred/tube preamplifier. Your's looks super clean, although I have always prefered ARC in silver. I like the contrast of the logo and the area where the switches are located.

I really like it in silver as well, but the rest of my gear is Black so it worked out fine. I will say this - The improvement brought forth by this piece will send me down a more expensive road then I have been traveling!:scratch2:
The improvement in my system is more than just noticable. I'm anxious to get the main system back together once I get my Behringer DCX 2496 back from being modified by Engler Electronics.
Happy Holidays,
Jim
