How Best to Enjoy Multi-Channel SACD via ModWright Oppo?

Hi guys,

Need your help and suggestion on the topic. Currently my setup is 2CH only.

I'm about to assemble a 5.1 or 5.2 system for both music and movies based on my ModWright Oppo 95; Onkyo PR-SC5507 pre/pro; and the Aesthetix Calypso Sig. linestage (w/ HT bypass & is connected to the power amps for the main left and right speakers). The Oppo 95 unit was both tube modified for 2CH and solid-state modded for MCH by Dan's camp. I'll be listening to 2CH CD and SACD via XLR stereo (tube) outputs from the Oppo directly to the Calypso's inputs.

For the MCH SACD playback, should I do it via HDMI cable to the Onkyo pre/pro, then use HT bypass on my linestage as if I'm watching BD or DVD? Or should/could I use the existing XLR stereo connection between Oppo 95 & Calypso in combination with RCA outputs (C, SL, SR, and perhaps SW) between the multi-player and the pre/pro? Or any other connection/settings?

Many thanks in advance for your kind assistance and suggestions.

Cheers,
Klao

Hi Klao,

The easiest answer (and the way I have my 105 set up) is to utilize HDMI for multichannel using the HT passthrough of your preamp. One cable, and it allows you to utilize the Audyssey room correction and distance/level settings of your Onkyo. However, that does not utilize the upgraded analog multichannel outputs of your Oppo 95. You WILL get increased resolution out of running the 5.1 RCA analog outputs from your Oppo, but the distance, crossover, and level settings will take more work to set up and get correct (using the inputs from the settings in your Onkyo as a starting point will help but you will still likely need to tweak). I would suggest trying both and determine which works best for you in terms of your room, speaker balance, and overall preferences. You may determine that you prefer the analog 5.1 for music listening and the HDMI with room correction for movies.

U may consider adding a parAsound p7 multi channel pre amp to use with the oppo analog pre outs for multi ch music
