MGIIIa's & Luxman

Spent the afternoon spinning vinyl and listening to a friend's pair of MGIIIa's. We started off with a vintage Sony TA-3200F he had recently recapped and it was very nice. Then he switched to his pair of Luxman 3045 tube monoblocks (42wpc using 6550 outputs) and the system was sublime. Going to take my Manley Mahi monoblocks over next visit to see how they sound with 14wpc of triode power. Should be fun. If it works, I'll likely have to find a pair.

Hey Glenn,

Thanks for posting your test result. Just curious what kind of music you were playing? Voice and acoustic instruments really shine with my Maggies.

Mostly female jazz & pop. Incredible clarity. 3 LPs and two CDs.

If you really want a set bad, there is a pair for sale in the electronics section of the Craigslist in Grand Rapids Michigan. I have been begging the wife to let me get them but she says I already have a good stereo and they take up too much space. :( They are all yours if you want them!

Thanks, but there is a pair about 60mi north of me if I get serious. At a time I'm attempting to 'downsize', picking up a pair of Maggies would likely not work well. Have to bide my time, unfortunately.

I know that feeling - good luck!

Thanks. Wish Maggie could figure out how to provide the same sound with a 1ft x 2ft panel that's sits 6" off the wall. Something about the laws of physics......... I'd pay as much for them as for a pair of 3.7i.

Wondering when those Manleys will show up. But with other pieces in the works we'll be busy trying them out. Almost time to put the IIIa back in the system.

Glenn,
I was sorry to miss that one.

Jim - just purchased a set of Kenwood L-07M monoblocks which are headed to Keith's. Once they arrive (waiting on the AK 'pony express' rather than shipping) we should twist Keith's arm to host us for a good 'listening session' with his Maggies and DQ-10s. I'll be schlepping along a 90wpc Sony MOSFET amp to compare, as well. Depending on my mood (and back), might even drag along my big Bryston (250wpc) amp, as well. Be most interesting to listen to the Maggies/DQ-10s with 42wpc of tubes/90wpc of MOSFETs/150wpc of Kenwood & 250wpc of Bryson as well as Keith's DNA-1 & Hafler.
