Excellent list Jim.

I'd add 'Schindler's List'.
Maybe 'Dunkirk' also.

Did not expect it to have the impact it had...

Add “The Pacific” to BoB series. Both are superbly done.

"Twelve O'Clock High" was required viewing prior to the first meeting of our Business Organization class in business school many years ago. The ensuing discussion was about the effectiveness of contrasting leadership styles.

The Battle of the River Plate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ba...lm)#Ships_used

HMNZS Achilles played herself.

My 1st Supervisor at work, his brother-in-law was on the Achilles during the battle- I asked if he was scared (hey, I was only 18 at the time- and the Battle of the River Plate is a big thing in New Zealand with our ship the HMNZ Achilles being in the battle). He said during the battle -no, said he was deep in the engine room & all he heard during the hour-long battle was the rumble of guns!

Said he was sh*t scared after the battle when he came on deck & saw the damage & the real possibility that the Graf Spee would resume the battle against them, which he said that they would have had 'no chance' of surviving, with just them & HMS Ajax able to fight.

From my younger years "Guns of Navarone". My Dad loved to take us to the movies that Mom didn't want to see.

Some that are more obscure.

Where Eagles Dare

Torpedo Run

Formerly YB-2 12-01-2018 06:53 PM

"Fury" would be another. Quite faithful in what a Sherman would have to do to defeat a Tiger.
"Monuments Men" was not particularly well done, but tells a good story.
And, for us Robert Mitchum fans, "The Longest Day", "Anzio" & "The Enemy Below", among others.

Mirror - Tarkovsky. You wan't art house, that's art house.

Sink the Bismark.

Can't say I 'like' the East European based one's like Burn't by the Sun or The Pianist, but their powerful. I guess it's mainly the blighty b+w one's made during or slightly after the war that are the staple.
