Denon AVR-5800 standing in for my Cary
So I am sitting here enjoying my Cary and some nice Holly Cole "Temptations" and the sound starts to crackle....I look over at the Cary and the far right KT88 looks like it is going Nova!
Naturally, that is the one tube I do not have a backup for.....Order sent in, maybe they'll be here by Tuesday or Thursday. Another great sounding but short lived Gold Lion. Last one's I order. I had the same issue with the 6922's. On the plus side I have been thinking about pulling my old Denon AVR-5800 out of the box for some dedicated 2 channel use. 200 watts/ch of pure 2 channel power. It is huge and weighs in at 62 lbs. From Michael Fremer's 3/29/2001 Stereophile review of the receiver: "If you plug an analog (gasp!) source into the AVR-5800—a turntable or perhaps the analog outputs of an SACD player—the signal is delivered to the amplifiers in the analog domain without any A/D and D/A conversion. Furthermore, when the input is analog, power to the digital section is turned off. The attention paid by Denon in their attempt to get a complex multichannel receiver to behave like a high-performance, 2-channel, high-end audio product is, in my experience, unprecedented." I have to say having so much power and reserve really makes the bass uber solid with the Vandersteen's. Nothing like a full range speaker that is well amplified. However, in Pure Direct mode with no lights on it has no visual sex appeal compared to a properly appointed tube amp! http://i987.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_1209.jpg It does sound great, I have to say. Very different from the tubes I have been enjoying with Decware and Cary. It'll be fun to listen to the difference for a few days. Nice to have choices. |
Great idea to re-purpose that Denon!
Seems you and I had similar ideas over the past few days. I had a Denon DVD-2910 DVD/CD/SACD languishing in its box in the spare room closet and decided to put it back in service. Even though it's an older unit, the 192kHz/24-bit Burr-Brown DSD-1791 audio DACs provide a fantastic listening experience. It will process DVD-Video, DVD-R & DVD-RW, DVD+R & DVD+RW, and Video CD along with SACD, DVD-Audio, CD, CD-R & CD-RW, MP3 and WMA CD-R & CD-RW. I think I'll have some fun learning how to burn DVD audio and experiment a little. It IS nice to have choices! |
I have been using my Denon DVD-5900 as a primary SACD player for quite awhile. It was made during a 10 year period where Denon really put the effort into top level sound quality. The only thing it cannot process are the blu-ray DVD audio discs. I use my Oppo BDP-83 for those.
Denon did a great job using the Burr Brown DAC's. I am really enjoying the 5800 with my HD800's and Vandersteen's. Strong stuff for sure! |

I have a DVD-3910 working with an AVR-4308ci. They are sourcing my Vandersteen 1B's I have had for nearly 30 years!

Always liked Denon. Would have done more of it, but got sidetracked by other brands.
|
That is REALLY easy to do John. LOL
|
heh heh...Hence my Cary...:D
|
Yeah...I had my first exposure to the Cary line when I auditioned some Aerial Acoustic speakers. Lovely machine!
|
It was love at first listen for me. Had to have the SLI-80!

I have one of these in a second system. When they were made, the price tag was very high for a receiver. Apparently, Denon's marketing looked at separates because they were at a price point where they could do so, but their research indicated that the market wanted a one box receiver.
I want to repurpose mine for HT and use an Oppo 103 or 105 as a source. Does anyone know if the 5800 is stable with a 4 ohm load? It is rated at 6 ohms but not 4. I normally would not worry because I do not drive 2 channel that hard, but this is for theater and that tends to be more demanding. |

5800 is a decent machine. Try the HPs output. I have the AVP8000 and it has a great HPs output.
|
Good to hear that it can handle 4 ohms with ease. I guess I just need to lug it downstairs and see for myself.
528, what do you mean by HP? |

I have a 5800 that I use in a test rig. It's a beast of a unit. and well worth reintroducing into a 2ch or Hometheater setup. Plug in an Oppo 103 and it's like your breathed new life back into the unit. the DAC is still very capable as well. It's a solid unit all around. No HDMI required with the Oppo either. There are tons of ways to incorporate and utilize the 5800 with a little imagination. Airport express into one of the toslink digitial inputs for high quality streaming is just one of many ways to squeeze additional life out of this unit.
Glad to see a few more of these getting resurrected and put back to work. |
Just trying to amortize the $4k I invested way back when!
|
Found my 5803 while cleaning out the garage. This AVR was the beast during its time. When the kids are off to college, it may find its way back into the house.

I've always loved Denon. Before I got into higher end brands I always swore by them. Rock solid and never had and issue with any of their equipment.
