Sint Maarten
Just booked out trip to Sint Maarten over the New Year. We like staying right on the Great Bay beach and think it is the best one on the island. Will split our time between sitting under an umbrella on the beach and sitting in the water up to our chin. $25/day for an oversized chaise lounge, umbrella & bucket-o-beer (4-bottles on ice). The waiter at the Lazy Lizard will come down at noon and take our lunch order, as well. Just have to make sure my Kindle is fully charged in the morning. Taking the train round-trip from 30th Street to Miami (not many things less enjoyable then flying). We go for the couchette so we 'travel in style'. Couple of bottles of wine and appropriate munchies and good-to-go.

Dave - Silver Meteor down & Silver Star back.
Couchette is my wife's name (she, the French prof) for a private room that sleeps two. BTW - could you please purchase the line from 30th Street to AC? The state of NJ has it all F'd up and shut down. Supposedly for PTC installation, which we believe is a total lie. We think they simply moved all the rolling stock north. Now we have no train to Phila. |

Those are the ones from my tenure, here's the historical overview..... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ssor_railroads |
Then there is the merger of Norfolk Southern and Western Way.

Dave - thanks for the history link. I spent a short stint working for the FEC after graduating from HS in Jacksonville. Did not realize when I took the job there was a lengthy & nasty strike going on. $12/hr was heady pay in those days. For a week, anyway............
After talking with a someone we know who has a place in Sint Maarten, we've changed our plans to a cruise with a 1-day stay. She tells us that the island has not fully recovered from last year's hurricanes and a week might get pretty long. Next year for the week stay. |
