Dynaudio Contour 3.3 low volumes?
 

Given the 4 ohm nominal impedance and 88dB sensitivity, what one should expect from a Dynaudio Contour 3.3 on low volumes? (late night listening)

Specially paired with a McIntosh MC402 solid state amp which is 400wpc.

These speakers really shine on moderate to loud levels and thus sound bass shy on low volumes or are they capable of delivering a pleasant, good resolution sound at these conditions?

Yes! I thought of Dyn 3.3 but I'm concerned about its performance at low volume levels. Any owners care to chime in?

There's another factor that plays into this, the pre-amp.
Either way, I think the Dynaudios deserve a better amp...

I cannot speak to Dynaudio specifically but I think it is pretty common for larger speakers to require the volume to be turned up at bit before you will hear fully realize the entire audio spectrum. Here is where tone controls and loudness controls used to come into play.

The pre-amp is a McIntosh C2300. What kind of amp do you think these Dynaudios deserve?

I think 601's would be perfect. The 452 should be a nice option too.

otenmsa.......The Dynaudio Contour 3.3 are relatively efficient at 89dB. In addition they are rated as a 4 ohm speaker with the minimum impedance shown as 3.2 ohms. This means the speaker will be relatively easy to drive with nearly any amplifier, solid state or tube. My suggestion would be to consider an amplifier with at least 150 watts per channel so that you have sufficient headroom for those times when you'll want to crank it a bit.

Since you are using a C2300 preamplifier I assume you wish to stay with McIntosh, so perhaps a MC252 as a starting place. My personal opinion is the C2300 and MC452 would be the perfect mates for the Dyns and will likely keep you very pleased for many years.

What is the problem with MC402 and Dynaudio 3.3?

The C2300 is a wonderful pre. Worse comes to worse, you can crank up the tone controls to get a boost, with lower volumes.

As for the amp, go for at least a more powerful Mc, or better yet, something more refined, like Boulder, Pass, etc.
