I need to get more bass from my SF O3s
 

I bought a set of 03s a few months back.
In the demo room they lacked bass, and when placed in a different demo room they were very boomy. My salesguy said the room has everything to do with sound, and a bigger room offers better bass than a small room.

When I took them home my bass sounds week, and this room is huge.
My saleguy said that they need to be broken in and will get a deeper sound over time. While this could be true, a few months have passed and it's nowhere as good as the second demo room.

My MC preamp allows for me to set my O3s as "small" but the crossover is 150 hz at the lowest and I cringe when thinking of setting my O3 towers as small.

Any tips on how to get the best bass from O3 towers?

I'm sorry I cannot offer a solution, but for future reference, please don't rely too much on what sales guys say. Their business is to sell you a product and will usually try to achieve the sale by promising you the moon. The best dealers offer in-home auditions or a money-back guarantee if you're not satisfied.

I hope you can return these if all your efforts to achieve the bass you want is futile.

Besides a pair of subwoofers?

I have subwoofers.
2 channel music won't use a sub unless I set my speakers to "small" and the crossover is 150 hz.
Does distance from a wall or room shape or size effect bass?
My salesguy dragged the O3 from one room two another room since I new I like these speakers, but I was testing pre/pro and realized a world of difference.

I love these speakers, and the salesguy warned me that SF isn't a bass heavy speaker, and I'll need a sub. I have a sub but the only way to get 2 channel to be a 2.1 is the crossover.

Try to describe the room in size, and also where the speakers and listening position is in the room.
Pictures would be even better.

The distance to walls, room shape and size has a huge impact on bass performance.

What did you have before the O3s? If they were more bass heavy then you might need to let your brain and ears adjust, new sounds.
Also I look at bass as more what I want is highly defined bass where I hear the bass player's fingers hitting notes and they come thru with detail. With more bass I find those details get hidden.

Placement is also key.....When I auditioned my Rega RX5s they had them maybe 100mm from back wall and the bass was huge!! Room filling but too much heart pounding. Moved them about 12" from the wall and bass reduced, more defined and clear.
I'm lucky with my setup I have my speakers just over 1m away from wall....More than enough bass but with high detail and excellent staging.

Once they breakin I would experiment with placement......

SF 03 was my first good set. I had a set of Bose 321 but didn't really use it for a couple years before getting my O3 setup.

The bass is missing like something is wrong. In most of the room the bass is barely noticeable, and in some areas like the card table area and behind the bass is overpowering. The overpowering bass doesn't even sound good. It's not deep or clear.
I talked to Will from Sonus Faber and he said it sounds like I have a lot of bass cancellation and for a bigger room I need more air movement. He suggests moving the speakers around. I'm almost 4' from the wall and it looks crazy. I've had some improvements moving the speakers into the room, but I'm not sure how far I'm willing to put them in.

Mouse, I had good sound in my room with my Giyas well into the room, toed in.
Well, that is what I thought.
I had a speaker whisperer coming over, and he placed the speakers much closer to the walls and I gained 3 to 4 dB bass! (That means I got about double the amount of bass).
Less toe in then, gave a much better soundstage.
Don't give up on your SF speakers.
They should work.

I also have O3’s and drive them with a MA7900. I measured the room response with REW and there was too much bass so I run Dirac Live on my MacBook while playing music from Audirvana to get a good response. It looks like bass is absent but my measurement mike tells me otherwise. If you think you don’t have bass try to measure it with REW. There are calibrated measurements done by a Canadian lab that show a good response, but you need to drive them with an amp that still has power at 2 ohm load.
