Uninterrupted Power Supplies
 

Need some help from those that are more electronically savvy then myself. Would like to buy a UPS for my office audio equipment. Goal would be to keep my equipment powered on for at least the 10 seconds it takes for the whole house generator to kick on. Here is what I have:

Esoteric F-05 Integrated - 320 watts (68 watts when not in use)
PS Audio Perfectwave Dac - 30 watts
Silenzio Music Server - Not sure of watts
Apple IMAC - Max 365 Watts continuos power

Two questions

1. How do I translate the power requirements of my equipment into the required specs of the UPS?
2. Any recommendations on Brand/Model of UPS?

I always thought it was a very bad idea to use a UPS on a audio system because they distort the current quite a lot and they are far from a sinewave.

I've been using a PSaudio P5 to protect the system in case of a surge but I never considered anything against interruption for that reason.

Georges.......Many of the CyberPower UPS and the APC UPS models have sine wave output when on battery. When not on battery they simply pass the wall power straight through to the receptacles. I use the APC Smart-UPS C 1000VA LCD RM 2U 120V in my living room system to back up my Aurender N100H music server and the Schiit Audio Yggdrasil DAC. I power the APC UPS from the PS Audio P10. It works like a champ.

I had an APC S20 for about 7 yrs, replaced the batteries once, then an internal issue made it prohibitive for repair. At the time this was a $2K retail price.

I have used the APC units in the past to protect my audio gear from power outages. Spinning discs have never like to have their power stopped due to a power outage. I have had a whole house backup generator for several years now but that does take a few seconds to automatically kick in. To protect my network for those few seconds I still maintain a APC unit on my router and i5 Roon server.

Based on some discussion with some industry people some of these power protection devices can add noise back into your power lines for devices to see. Not sure how every manufacturer addresses the issue but it is something to consider. Noise just doesn't disappear.
