I told him I was using them in my amp and he said he never heard them single ended so he built that amp. No problem running them like a 6L6 with adapters in our amps. Use a 5U4G/5Z3 rectifier.

6K6GT's

I have a pair of Hytron 6K6GT's so I popped 'em in my amp. :music: They are similar to a 6V6. About 4.5 watts single ended. Very detailed, huge soundstage, excellent tone and timbre, great harmonics and bass. Use a 5Y3/80 rectifier. The 80 rectifier is a 5Y3 with a UX-4 base (4 prong). 80's are less $$ than 5Y3's but you need an adapter which will also allow you to use 5Z3's in your amp (but not with the 6K6's. 6L6, KT66's, KT88's yes.) which are the same as a 5U4G but sell for less. Dennis built my amp with a UX-4 rectifier socket so I got an adapter to use 5AR4's etc.

I just snagged a pair of NOS Tung Sol black glass 6K6GT's for the princely sum of $11. YMMV but .

Taj Mahal is in the living room. :club:

I also have a Decware Mini Torii amp that uses 6V6's. I got the Hytrons a few years ago to use in it. They are way better in the Inspire. Waaay better. These Inspires are, IMHO, amazing amps.

I just saw some NOS/NIB Hytron 6V6GT's on the auction site for $10.95. The seller has 10 pairs...soon to be nine. :D

Gassy NU 6BG6

Here is a pic of the gassy/microphonic tubes I have to return. They are NOS/NIB so that means nothing and they look fine (I did clean the pins and bottle) but were not tested by the seller. I bought them untested because they are impossible to find and I knew I could return them. The flashing is silver. The flash on the camera darkened it.

As another poster said, you can also use 807's with adapters. There is voltage under the cap of the adapter so be careful if you have small children around.

FloridaBoy,

So in your opinion in your system, etc. do these 6BG6 tubes sound better than the KT88's or the 6L6's you have had or just different? Or just a cheaper alternative?

FloridaBoy 08-05-2015 02:18 PM

Beatle, some of them sound excellent, like RCA black plates, and they are less expensive than NOS because of the exposed anode and power limitation (not an issue in these amps) of a 6L6G which is what 6BG6 is. I bought some of these a few years ago just to try them but I am not going to build a large collection of them. I think they are worth experimenting with but don't spend a lot on them. The problem with forums is that we can't 'hear' a post and what we prefer is subjective. My only purpose was to point out some alternatives. There is no ego involved. Right now I am listing to Channel Master 6BG6's from Japan and they are very nice.

Regarding $$$ NOS power tubes many believe, including me, that new production in most cases is equal to or better than NOS. They are often priced on rarity not sonics.

Rectifiers? I like NOS/used tested but do have a Psvane 274B coming. I just wanted to try it :D and it is my first new production purchase. However, the price for Mullard metal base 5AR4's has just gotten silly. A regular Mullard
5AR4 is still a very fine tube and they seem to last forever.

Hope this helps.

FB, this is really a question for Dennis I know but you seem to have some insight based on your statement above. To clarify what you mean by "our amps", without going back somewhere in the 915 post thread, I have a 2013 "Hot Rod" with the KT66/KT88/KT120 switch on the front. Would you consider this to be included in "our amps"?

You should be able to use use the 6BG6, 807 or 6AR6, with adapters, as a 6L6/KT66 with the bias switch on your amp in the KT66 position but I would ask Dennis to be sure. The amps he is producing now are self biasing and have no switch for different tubes.

I think I saw your amp and preamp in an old AK thread. Way cool!

I have been interested in supporting new tubes since NOS is ultimately unsustainable, especially with Output tubes since the do not last as long. Anyway, I tried waiting for them to break in and best some others (J/J, KT150, new Tung Sol) and never got their. I am sure I will try again soon since I have new speakers on the way which will require a complete rolling. Right now I am running a pair of NOS GE KT66s. Anyone else have feedback on the Psvanes?

Bear, I have read that the Psvane power tubes can take 300 hours to fully settle in. I don't think these amps are hard on power tubes so they should last a long time. Maybe you can finish burning them in with your new speakers as they settle in? IMHO, rolling tubes will be rather pointless until the speakers get a work out.

I just received a Treasure CV181 and it is supposed to take a good while too.
I've used the Psvane 12**7 tubes and they take a while too. 75-100 hours.

Do you have the British KT66's? I have not heard them or the reissues but I like 6L6's. I have Sylvania 6L6GAY's and I'm trying to decide between the GL KT66's, Valve Art KT66's, Tung Sol big bottle 6l6 or Treasure KT-66's

So this Sweet 807 SE amp, along with modded and upgraded CJ PV12 (incredible phono stage), Micro Seiki DD40 w/Denon DL110 cart, and Altec Duplex 604-8G speakers has pretty much put a stop to my endless pursuit of audio nirvana.
Could it get better, probably. However, there are moments when I am pretty sure it can not!
Loving this combo and thank you Dennis Had!!

Yes, the chase stops when you say it does and I am there too. I have had more expensive amps and preamps but none that I have enjoyed and much as the Inspire gear. I no longer care about pursuing the elusive last 10%.
