Dan thank you. I was hoping to maintain the room's look. I'm looking forward to dialing it in. It's very raw right now, setup, cabling etc.

Very cool office setup - I don’t know if I’d get much done there, I’d be too distracted by the nice sounds.

mcpaf76 09-02-2018 01:20 PM

Thanks I don't either lol. I don't actually work from home, its more for bill paying, photo editing, general computer use etc. Seating position for listening is pushed way back from desk. It's really a 2nd full system, set up that way, with occasional use at the desk.

Nice mike loves the Contour 20s too! :)

Are you maybe going to add a small sub at some point?

Definitely not, that's why I chose these over the Special 40's, They sound almost like full range. I don't like subs in 2 channel personally. Stuff is breaking in nicely, much smoother.

I would be really interested in comparison of midrange and highs performance of Contour vs. your Sopras. I’m considering Sopras 2/3 or Contour 60 for my main system. I like the dynamics and midrange of the Sopras but in some systems I’ve heard them personally to be bright. Never had a chance to hear Contour.

I'm my system, detailed yes, bright no. Believe it or not with the McIntosh and the Contours, the highs and mids remind me a lot of my sopras running on my NAD separates. I do think the Contour tweeter might run a touch sweeter though, it's hard to tell because of the tube pre section on the amp. The Sopras are a lot bigger sounding and obviously go a lot lower with bass. The Contours aren't dialed in yet but Sopras are definitely more transparent. In the Contour system I haven't even messed with positioning, room treatments or cabling yet so it is very early to compare.

Got a new listening chair. Also just placed an order for 6 GIK acoustic panels Attachment 56320

avsBuddy 09-06-2018 12:56 PM

How do you like GIK stuff so far? My local dealer advised against them as fabric quality is poor in his opinion.

Honestly, I got upgraded fabric on my first order and 3 art panels. Everything was good. My current order is mostly upgraded fabric as well, with standard fabric on the 2 that will cover the windows and be hidden behind the shade. I could comment better when those arrive. They kind of hint standard fabric isn't the greatest, but it offers different price points. I would not get the standard fabric on anything visible.

Thanks, I agree. I’m super pleased with them and I own much more expensive speakers as well as auditioning a ton of other bookshelves. I could say they’re great for the price but they’re just great in general.

In my opinion Dynaudio speakers offer some of the highest performance vs. cost ratio in high end audio. Few can bring near full range sound from this size speaker or price point.

Well stated, I 100% agree with everything you just said! I also liked the 805d3 a lot, but the fullness and scale of these won me over, and they were cheaper. They also look incredible.

Audioraven 09-07-2018 07:01 PM

That listening chair looks comfy! Nice setup.:thumbsup:

miner 09-07-2018 09:07 PM

Love that setup. To me bookshelves image better than floorstanders, in general. Dyns are a lovely speaker brand. My entry level Audience 52SE played well above their price point.

Thanks, yeah I'm sure they do. The Special 40's I auditioned were incredible for the money also.

clpetersen 09-08-2018 09:18 AM

Special 40's

Agreed. These are really nice speakers (Contour 20's and Special 40's). We chose the Special 40's for the summer place.

Special 40s were great. Was a really tough decision between them.

Sorry, resurrecting an old thread here. I'd be curious to know your thoughts on both. Strengths and weaknesses of either and what won you out in the end.

mcpaf76 07-25-2019 08:45 PM

No problem, it's a little while ago so it's not as fresh in my memory. Both are very smooth. Enjoyable to listen to, no fatigue that I could perceive with either. I was committed to running full range, the Contour 20s just sounded a little fuller because of their size advantage. If anything the highs and mids were too close to call, possibly a slight not to the Special 40 tweeter. They are both well balanced but if you want to spend a bit more, the Contours can compete with smaller floors standers I believe. Not sure about special 40 but the Contours need a decent amp they're decently hard to drive at 4 ohms and the sensitivity isn't great. I'm currently running with a Parasound Hint 6 they sound very good.

From what I read they are more alike than different. Seems the Countour is more neutral overall. Food for thought I suppose.

mcpaf76 07-26-2019 08:47 PM

Yes I think that would be accurate. In my system nothing about them seems exaggerated. Neutral in a good way.
