'Hipster kryptonite': will CDs ever have a resurgence?
|
Tony, maybe... but I doubt it.
My three daughters, 19, 24 and 27 only own a couple of CDs. And I bought them! They stream (they have Spotify, they do YouTube, and they use our Tidal and Qobuz accounts). |
Somehow, I can’t see a CD resurgence. LPs has retro/nostalgia attached to it, not to mention that many audiophiles swear that they sound better than CDs. Although there has been a fairly recent recognition of CDs as purveyors of excellent sound, that’s happening at a time when streaming offers similar sound quality and convenience that CDs can’t match.
(Today even car manufacturers are leaving the CD player out of the car.) |
A friend gave me a CD as a present recently. It was a new release (John Coltrane’s lost tapes). I have yet to unwrap the clear plastic since I added it to my library (via Tidal) the first day it came out. I thought: the demise of CDs will make gifting a tangible object more challenging!

'Hipster kryptonite': will CDs ever have a resurgence?
For the most part I agree it’s not likely, I just found the article interesting if misguided and a bit misinformed. On the other hand, I never expected the millennials I know to be into vinyl, so who’s to say what the next generation may find cool?

They still seem to love them in Japan.
CD's as well as SACD's are a huge 85% of the Japanese music buying market according to this article. https://metropolisjapan.com/cds-still-big-japan/ |
