Nakamichi 1000ZXL Limited

I have an opportunity to acquire an absolutley mint Nakamichi 1000ZXL Limited.

I really don't have an immediate use for it, and if I do get it would probably sell my Nakamichi Dragon.

Thoughts?

Unless you are going to start collecting older gear, I don't see the point of owning this fine piece of audio history. It's not like you are going be be playing cassettes any time soon.

Don't worry Jim... that is unless I start collecting 8-track players. :lmao:

Hey there were some nice TEAC reel to reel tape machines in the 70's that could also play/record 8 tracks and cassettes.

Ivan.......That is the granddaddy of cassette recorders and a true classic collectors item. If it never gets played, it's still a super cool piece of audio history to have on display.

Yup... I haven't even played my Dragon other than testing it, since I opened it.

I remember when TDK used to set up demos using a Nakamichi 1000, a signal generator and a dual trace oscilloscope to demonstrate the frequency range of TDK cassette tape. They would ask people to bring in a sample tape from their favorite competitor, then the TDK folks would record a slow frequency sweep, monitoring the Nakamichi output on one oscilloscope trace and the signal generator output on the other trace. At the time, TDK's top tape was the only cassette tape that was flat 20Hz to 20kHz, and the Nakamichi 1000 was the only cassette tape recorder that could demonstrate that full frequency spectrum. It was fun to watch guys come in thinking their tape would beat TDK. It didn't happen.

Even the standard ZXL looks sweet!
