Picture disk vinyl noise
 

Hi everyone,

I've never noticed this before (I had this super nice gear) but my picture disk vinyl records have a "noise". It's like I can hear the needle dragging across the record. Anyone else notice this during quiet passages on their vinyls pressed with pictures? First noticed it on Taylor Swift's reputation, could it just be a bad pressing?

Alkizz - hard to say without hearing it firsthand, but I can tell you that out of every piece of vinyl I've ever played on my turntable, the noisiest in general were the ones that are colored vinyl or with pictures. I've read elsewhere that that's the general consensus. Only way to be sure is to swap the title out and compare. I try my best to avoid any colored vinyl pressings or one's with anything printed.

I've had some (solid/single) colored vinyl which plays without excessive surface noise, but picture disks seem to be a completely different experience. They're made primarily for display or collecting and not really optimized for quiet playback. YMMV applies.

Thanks gents... I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan :sigh::sigh::banana::banana: so it's depressing... Hopefully it won't damage the cart.

I avoid picture and coloured disks with a vengence, generally found them to be noisier.

Same here. I think of them as novelty items.

I guess my next purchase is a freaking DAC so I don't have to play Reputation on vinyl anymore. Sigh. Never ending hobby.

Yeah, picture discs always seem to be noisier than regular pressings. I have probably less than 10 of them. Off the top of my head, 2 of them are 45s where the songs were only pressed in that format. One is a rarer pic disc from one my favorite bands so it was worth it, it's fun to pull it out and give it a spin.

Colored vinyl I haven't really had any noticeable issues with, I know people love buying the limited edition rare only 1,000 pressed colored releases but I'm beyond that. I don't sit and look at the records while they spin, so the color is irrelevant to me.
