Your Favorite Lens

What is your favorite lens to shoot with?

With my Nikon D700 it is the 85mm f~1.4G AF-S

Canon 24-70mm 2.8L

Masterlu 05-26-2012 11:19 PM

My 24-70mm 2.8 gets a fair amount of action too.

MikeSp 05-27-2012 01:18 AM

My Walkabout go to lens is my Canon 24-105 f/4 L -- love the image stabilization -- if the new 24-70 f/2.8 Mark II had IS, I would grab a copy.

For routine portrait and other tele use, my go to lens is the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L Mark II.

I only have 2 Nikon lenses. Of the two, my fav is the 24-70 F2.8.

Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6.

Hard to beat the ease and convenience of my 18-200 Nikon zoom, vrII. It's on my camera 90 percent of the time.

AudioNut 05-27-2012 08:15 AM

I like the light weight and excellent image quality of the Nikon 16-85 zoom. I also have an 18-200, and image quality is also good, but the "lens creep" drives me crazy.

Whenever I need more speed, I use the tiny and cheap Nikon 35mm F1.8 lens. For distance I like the excellent Nikon 70-300 mm f/4.5-5.6G AF-S VR which is super sharp, yet light and manageable.

When I was younger, I owned and used the big and heavy f2.8 zooms, but now I favor slower, but considerably lighter and less bulky lenses.

I do wish that Nikon would make lenses similar to Canon's 17-40 F/4 and 70-200 F/4 "L" lenses. F4 is fast enough for most purposes and I would assuredly pay more for the superior image quality that could be provided by such lenses.

My camera body of choice is a Nikon D300 and I see no reason to update every time a new body in introduced. I also use a D-90 but wish I had the lighter and smaller D5100 and may make that change.

Mike,

Love my copy too. Somewhat on the heavy side though...the Lady offers to carry it when we take it on our trips. :O

I still have the 24-105 f/4 & it gets a fair bit of use. Hoping for a 24-70 f/2.8 Mark III with IS too!

These new Cinema Pro lenses look interesting, but I think they are even heavier.

Without question, the most fun I've ever had with a lens has been with my Nikkor 14-24mm f2.8. It's big enough to block on camera flash, doesn't accept filters, subject to flare due to its huge field of view, heavy as sin to lug around, but oh so wonderfully clear, crisp, and colorful.

My favorite is my Canon 70-200/f2.8 *non*-IS. Don't like IS lenses for motorsports photography.

My second favorite is the Canon 17-40/4

btf1980 05-27-2012 02:34 PM

Don't really have a favorite. It depends on the situation, but I do love the 85mm f/1.8G Nikkor. A really great portrait lens, and the bokeh is creamy! I use it a lot.

Atane, have you ever had your hands on the DC (defocus control) lens?

My favourite lens could be my next one. My Leica Summilux 50mm F1.4 has just arrived in the shop in the UK after almost 7 months of wait :tears: Should get it soon though

Bokeh, here I come!

No you are not, I am :tears:. Wishful thinking I guess.

EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM it is.

Puma Cat 05-28-2012 11:51 PM

Okay, I know that lens and it's excellent. Especially on a 5D series.

The EF 28MM F1.8 USM was my 2nd favorite on my 7D (after the most excellent 17-55 IS), and now is my favorite on my 5D MKIII

Paazel... How do you like the new 5DMkIII body? I believe the AF has been updated along with the Digi processor & the movie modes. I have the MkII which I love.

MyPal 05-30-2012 02:35 AM

EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM

I picked this up in Dubai on the way home from Europe. I haven't used it much yet but it takes freaky super wide shots in low light & there is no fish-eye effect! Great for architecture. External filters need not apply... I can make The Lady look like a smurf when shooting top down!

114° field of view, this prime lens goes beyond human perspective. Ideal for capturing small interiors, large subjects at close distances or dramatic landscapes, this highly expressive lens can also be used to create a strong sense of separation between close subjects and background.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. The full frame sensor just gobbles up light. Full frame + the massive AF update were the two deciding factors for me to move from 7D to 5DIII.

I think I'm going to be shooting with my primes for the most part; I'm not so thrilled that the 24-70 II is $2300 and no IS!

Fantastic!....I would prefer the 24-70 if it had IS. I'm not a big fan of the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, b/c it is f/4L & can be on the softer side...Alas, cannot part company with it as it is still a convenient all rounder.

Next on the cab is a EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II. Now that is an awesome prime!

Oh That. Yeah. About that. IT'S AMAZING. I picked it up earlier this year as well! I've used it a bit on my 5DIII, but not sure I love the distortion at the edges. Plus I'm super scared to scratch that element! On my 7D it was the sharpest lens I have ever used. Here are a couple of pics I made with that 14mm & my 7D.

That's next on my list too :) No more lenses after that! 14, 28, 50, 70-200! But then I'll want to replace my flash units with the 600! :tears:

Wow...Super shots of The Louvre. Makes me want to go back & take that shot!!! I agree it is super sharp, even better than the 16-35mm zoom.

Yes, the 14mm does have a very slight edginess to it, but with careful framing, I think you can compensate. At the very worst, there is always Photoshop!

Same here... I have the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM too & matching 2x extender. It is a little on the heavier side...

As for flash, I haven't managed to get a proper handle of the 580EX II yet & need more practice with flash photography... I read the 600 is more forgiving & easier to use.

paazel 05-30-2012 03:18 AM

I'm going to try to funk around more with the 14mm, try to get a better handle on it. I'm excited for the 600 as it has RF for remote trigger built in. I had to get remote trigger for a shoot once, and I was led to the flashpoint ones. They're poorly built & didn't work as well as I would have liked.
