Straga-Gee: Is Krell Out of Business?
 
This isn't just a rumor site; this site was the first to note when Classe closed and when Thiel closed its doors and has been following Gibson's difficulties for years now, and so this piece was a good read about rumors and how they often run away with themselves:

Recently, we have spoken with multiple sources who have said that Krell Industries, a maker of high-end, high-performance electronics, has fallen on hard financial times. Some suggested the company closed at the end of last week for good. Others told us the company may be already in bankruptcy or in the process of filing for bankruptcy. Is this another Classé situation?

While we have received outreach from various sources over the years about Krell, these tended to ebb and flow, and typically never amounted to much. However, recently, the number of people reaching out to us has increased noticeably. Not only that, but each had slightly different stories about the company – but stories that added up to the same thing – Krell was in trouble.

Some told us that Krell was on a cash basis with its suppliers, causing big backorders for product shipments. Others said the company was not issuing return merchandise authorizations (RMAs), even in the case of customer repair products.

Finally, during the storm, we connected with Krell co-founder and current owner Rondi D’Agostino. We asked D’Agostino, is Krell in bankruptcy or planning to file for bankruptcy?

“No, not at all,” said a surprised D’Agostino. “Whoever your source is, don’t use them anymore. They don’t know what they’re talking about.”

In other words, we pressed D’Agostino, you’re saying everything is fine…correct? “Well, it’s not perfect, but we’re not filing for bankruptcy and we’re not going out of business. It’s business as usual…after the storm is over.”

In further discussion with D’Agostino, we attempted to determine why the sudden burst of rumors about Krell. She suggested that the source of all of these rumors may be as a result of a message the company had recently put out. This was a notice saying that Krell wasn’t accepting any more service units for some time. When we suggested that was a bit of an unusual communication, D’Agostino said that it was not financially driven – rather, they had just run out of space to accept more units for service and were seeking to stem the incoming flow while technicians processed units already in house.

“We just put a [temporary] halt on them,” D’Agostino said. “We’re getting through the backlog pretty good…they’ve been going out pretty regularly. So we’ll probably open up to start accepting more repair units starting tomorrow.”

D’Agostino told us that there is “no rhyme or reason” to how many units come in for service at any one time. In late Fall, she said, they had hardly any units in for service work. But now, it’s a different story.

“We’ve been in business for 38-years, and there’s a ton of units out there,” D’Agostino told us, explaining that this normal service flow and not the result of some catastrophic failure. “So we just ran out of space, but we’re ready to open it up again for new service units.”

D’Agostino concluded our conversation by reassuring me that although people have predicted their demise at times over the years, Krell is still here and still going strong. As proof of that, she told us that the company is just about to launch another new model within the next 60-days.

Hard to discern. Company spokespeople and executives always deny until the padlocks are installed on the doors. All I know is I don't see many reviews on Krell gear, don't see much advertisement from them, and I know of no dealers that carry them around me. That lack of exposure to the audiophile community can't be helping them maintain marketshare.

While the comment about running out of space could be true, it doesn’t smell right. Disrupting incoming service units is odd except for special circumstances, and space should be handled without such an action. Hmm. :thought:

I know that the D’Agostino family lost control of the business to a private equity group a long time ago and started D’Agostino Audio. It is a surprise to see them still active. What has transpired?

I honestly haven’t demoed or listened to any of the new Krell products since the transition, but with respect to the current team at Krell, all thier products sure do look cheap compared to the quality that Dan brought back in the late 90’s. I know looks can be deceiving but a first impression is important and I think the majority of their new products look almost mid fi.

I read that was when he was still married to his first wife Rondi? Fast forward now with a new company that is busy building product and a new wife for several years now.

So Krells is hiring comedians as spokespeople. I started laughing midway through reading the "statement". There's only two ways to read her statement: Krells is broke and is on a cash basis with suppliers and thus doesn't have parts to repair units or Krell gear is made so poorly that they break down often and need repair. Neither puts Krell in a good light. Where there's smoke there almost always is fire. The ship be sinkin'

With all do respect there are a lot of assumptions your making . I’m a Mcintosh guy not Krell but it is better when you don’t know something and none of us really do don’t make stuff up.

Rondi talks about things not being perfect and things being fine after the storm is over. For her to use these words indicates at the very least they are in serious trouble. Krell was almost the "it" brand in the 90s in the audiophile community. I never would have fathomed they'd be in this state today. But when the founder who drove the design excellence and was the face of the company leaves, there were bound to be struggles. The new D'Agostino company is Krell's heir-apparent.

I don’t want to speculate Tom. I continue to receive their newsletter in the email with regular frequency. The holiday special mentioned 40% off discounts on trade in towards new models and 25% off refurbishing services. That doesn’t tell me anything about their financial state though. It’s been a long time since I’ve purchased any Krell gear and I certainly don’t have any future plans of adding any Krell gear. I hope they stay in business, it’s always sad to see the names we have been accustomed to seeing over the decades of being in this hobby disappear.

I still have a Krell Showcase Processor that I purchased used 10 years ago. Never a problem and have no desire to change. Use it strictly for movies. Looking at all the modern AVR's and processors and all the problems they have I'll take my Krell. They were built to last.

People, products, and process. That's basically what makes a business.

It's especially hard with company who's driven by a single person.

Dan D'Agostino products would have been Krell products if he wasn't forced out. May have been called something else but they would have been his top line.

After talking to him at a couple of demos maybe or maybe not. While developing products at Krell he indicated he proved that he could drive distortion to levels with lots of leading zeros along with plenty of power. His goal with the Momentum's was to make sure they sounded great even if the "numbers" weren't SOA.

I was a manufacturer’s rep for 20 years; most of us would’ve been gone after one Quarter of no commission payments.

They are definitely still open. I had very recent email communication with Krell service department.

I also have an Amp with them for repair which I brought them myself. Saw their facility and they are definitely still in business. Working 4 days a week though.
