Jets are for the later stage of the hobby if so inclined because of the cost, the turbine waiver from AMA (no insurance) and the skills needed to keep these rockets in one piece.

Most of the guys are buying what's called an ARF airplane, (almost ready to fly) very little assembly needed anymore, either built up balsa planes or the very popular and easier to fix foam models. The days of building from balsa are pretty much over except for the old timers who still like to build their own. When it comes to jets, they can also be bought mostly prefabricated but there is still some serious assembly involved with the complexity of the turbine setup.
