Schiit DAC for vintage system

This Schiit’s all new to me so I’m hoping the Schiit experts can provide some advice. I’m restoring a 1970s vintage Yamaha CA-1010 integrated amp for use in my home workshop. Right now I just have a pair of small Martin-Logan Motion speakers, and don’t know where I’ll go next for speakers. Could be something like the Falcon LS3/5A or Blumenstein Orca. For source I have a couple of streaming options: I have a Linn Sneaky DS, which has a pretty decent DAC, and I have an old Squeezebox Touch (24/192 capable) to which I could add a DAC like a Gungnir or Bifrost. Any opinions? If I go with a Schiit DAC, would a Bifrost be a good fit given the Yamaha isn’t going to be the most transparent system? Or should I go for the Gungnir?

I think the Bifrost Multibit would be a good fit for this Yamaha integrated. Right level of functionality, performance and sound quality for the investment and for the integrated you're pairing it with.

I have a Bifrost MB that I've loved for a while. I just purchased a Gungnir MB and am "burning it in" now. They are both really nice sounding DACs. The Gungnir MB is more transparent and extracts more "detail" than does the Bifrost (understandably). They are both very "analog like" in their overall tonal balance and presentation. Other's on AA can probably give you better "advice" given what you will be hooking the DAC up to. That said, if you decide that you want a "like new" Bifrost Multi-Bit I'll be putting mine up for sale shortly. I hope its not against the rules to mention that - if so mods please feel free to delete.

For a 1970 vintage Yamaha receiver??? Don't waste your money on a Gungnir, you will never realize it's full potential. The preowned Bifrost sounds like a much more sensible purchase $$$ wise.

Thanks for the advice guys. Sounds like the Bifrost is the way to go. Soundmig, pm me when you’re ready, I’m in no hurry.

AntonMB ... I'm not exactly sure how to PM someone on AA. There is a drop down menu mentioned in the FAQ's and I'm not seeing the right options???

Sorry, I just noticed you’re not a subscriber. That’s why you can’t pm. Also you need to be a subscriber to sell gear here. The site rules are no side deals, and post all sale items in the marketplace. Sorry, I was posting using the AA app on an iPad last night and it doesn’t show subscriber info.

If you’re interested, here’s the link to become a subscriber - access to the marketplace is a great benefit and it only costs $25/year.

Makes sense - thanks for the information. I'll have to "subscribe" then :-)

Tony,

I have an Schiit Modi that I only use when I listen to headphones on my iPad. Something I haven’t done in a while. If you’d like to try it out for a few weeks, let me know. At least you will have some idea of how the Yamaha sounds with a digital source.

Mike
