Bodiezaffa gets his music room

5 Attachment(s)
6 yrs. That's how long I've listened to music in my unfinished basement.
But no more. Reno's have begun on my dedicated listening room.
Room size will be 21ft long x 13ft wide by 7'8" high. Unfortunately, supporting beams and floor configuration didn't allow for wider/higher room - I wanted 15ft - without making hallways too narrow....and 8 ft ceilings are 8ft ceilings.

To decouple the room from the rest of the house and add treatment, I chose a company called Kinetics Noise Control. Using:

WALLS:
130 each isomax clips
137 linear feet of wallmat 3 for top and bottom plates
100 each KAI-W bushings for wallmat 3 lag

CEILING:
76 each isomax clips
2 Injoist Duct Silencers.

To maintain integrity of isolation at an affordable price, no pot lights in ceiling, only wall sconces and floor lighting.

I've posted a few pics of basement before demolition and after some build.
More to come.

Would appreciate any feedback/suggestions going forward.

Congratulations on the start and ultimate completion of this room!!!

Double the amount of dedicated 20 amp circuits you are already planning on.

Run Cat7 everywhere you remotely think you will need it. Just photograph where they are, no need to even expose them till needed.

I use Quiet Batt between all studs; wrap plumbing drains with it also. Fix it in place with long tywraps. Since you mentioned “Kinetics Noise Control“ don’t rely solely on your drywall config for the Best sound proofing.

Don’t expect existing HVAC to heat/cool a dedicated room. For your size room, I recommend a minimum of 2 Tons additional HVAC w/ a dedicated thermostat for the room.

SCAudiophile 06-15-2019 07:53 AM

Agree with Ivan...if you are wiring from scratch, CAT7 is a minimum requirement these days and should it be available now as promised from several sources, CAT8 in-wall should be looked at as well.

2Tons HVAC,...Ivan, is this much absolutely necessary for 275 sq feet/2300 cubic feet (rounded) or are you referencing entire basement space AND dedicated room? I have 2Tons covering 1100 sq feet/9990 cubic feet on 2nd floor of house incl closets and nooks with all the heat gain and the installer told me it's more than enough. Not second guessing here,...as I am not an HVAC expert, I am curious and asking for backing detail...if our guy's calcs were wrong please let me know....

Mark... for 2300 cubic feet in a dedicated room, 2 Tons is bare minimum. When you factor in the BTU’s of each person, gear, insulation and the rise from music raising the temp, it is spot on.

I personally use a 2 Ton split just in my catwalk in the Cape. ;)

PS: just because it is in a basement, don’t be fooled thinking it will remain cool; it won’t.

PPS: A single human body produces between 250 and 400 BTUs of power, depending on its state of consciousness.

SCAudiophile 06-15-2019 09:13 AM

Thanks Ivan...good info for the future!

When we visited you in '15 Ivan, I measured you at 750 BTUs!! :D

The room is complete and Im happy with it, aesthetically. Now and more important; sound control.
I have 4 Stillpoint Apeture panels which will be hung at 1st reflection point. The wood diffuser will stay at the front.
Im looking for suggestions for the front corners, back wall and back corners if needed.
Dimensions are 12.5ft wide, 20.6ft long and 7.5ft high.
Very interested to know what fellow AA members use.
Very very interested if the mfgr your endorsing has an office in Canada or any other process that doesn't add $$$ ship costs to the total.

This will be my very first dedicated listening room. As I've built my system over the last 13yrs, piece by piece, asking my system do its very best despite its environment of unfinished basement with concrete floors, concrete side walls and partially finished drywall. With the room almost finished, I am very exited to hear what the gear can really do.

mcpaf76 08-11-2019 04:10 PM

Looks great, bet you can't wait to get your gear in there.

jdandy 08-11-2019 04:41 PM

Mark.......Very nice. Great color choice, too. The results look fabulous. This is going to be an excellent dedicated audio room.

Congratulations on a job well done. . :applause:

chessman 08-11-2019 09:31 PM

Mark, outstanding job!

For The Love of Music 08-11-2019 09:47 PM

Yes, looks really good, have fun!

SCAudiophile 08-11-2019 10:02 PM

The room looks great!

j3brow 08-11-2019 10:32 PM

Congrats Mark, what a transformation!! So happy for you. What a treat you have waiting for you when you fire up your system. I too recently completed a dedicated room build. I also used IsoMax clips, walls and ceiling, with the drywall furrow channels etc, with excellent results. One of these days I’ll get around to documenting the build, I’m too busy enjoying it, as you will too[emoji41]

Masterlu 08-11-2019 10:42 PM

Mark... nothing like a dedicated audio room; very nicely done :ok:

kaarmstrong 08-14-2019 10:29 PM

Well done. Can't wait to see what it looks like once all your gear is in place.

Me too. I have a lot of echo and reflection to tame.

From a fellow Bianchi Infinito owner, nice job on the room!

Too funny!! Great bikes! Thanks

Weirdcuba 09-06-2019 08:27 PM

Hubba hubba. I’m nine months (fingers crossed) behind you. Congrats.

The feeling of anticipation one gets while building these things, waiting to unleash the system to its full potential, is indescribable.

The feeling of anticipation continues. The room has been finished for 3 weeks but I haven’t listened to one song yet. I had to wait for the room finished before I could address the acoustic treatment/placement.

Now I’m waiting for the proposal from Vicoustics. Ugh!

crwilli 09-08-2019 09:18 PM

Happy for you Mark and congratulations. Now comes the really fun part of tuning the room, defining listening and speaker positions for the optimal sound for you.

bodiezaffa 09-12-2019 12:29 PM

Thank you all for your kind words. I just put up the 4 stillpoint apeture panels. Paul from stillpoints suggested centred behind the speakers would give me the best results...and he was right.
Ill update soon with pics but Im still amazed at what these little 22x22 inch wood boxes can do.
If I had the $ to spend, Id cover all my wall, top to bottom with those panels.

Still waiting for Vicoustics proposal...

jtayres 09-12-2019 10:21 PM

Congrats! I can’t wait to see your gear in that room. It’s going to be a special day.

SL1800 09-14-2019 11:00 AM

Congrats on the new room!! Really looking forward to more pics.

This is the most recent shot with the gear set up, the aperture panels on wall and my new acquired listening chair. Btw, that chair glides and swivels which is a hug plus for someone who can’t sit still. Lol

Hi all.

Finally got around to taking a few shots of my room with all the gear set up.
As many of you predicted, the transformation of sound in beyond my expectations.
If any members are in the Toronto area, drop me a line. Music is best enjoyed with some spirits and company!

Antonmb 02-02-2020 01:03 PM

What a great room, well done!

chessman 02-02-2020 01:14 PM

That is exquisite. Well done!!

Weirdcuba 02-02-2020 01:22 PM

Great looking room. I am mid process on mine (at the bottom of the checking account, but still mid process).

Question - what was your thought process on wall to wall carpet? Aesthetically, I would prefer hard wood with an oriental rug, but sound wise, I can’t make up my mind. Consistent advice I have heard is natural wool, whichever way one goes.

Thanks. Congrats again - wine and fine sounds on me when we’re done with this thing (at that point, I will only be able to afford grocery store wine).

SCAudiophile 02-02-2020 02:13 PM

Mark,...Congratulations on that beautiful room and system!!!

Also Mark...

I knew going into the room project, I room would sound very “live”.
I did a very thick underpad and carpeted wall to wall.
With wall and ceiling treatments,on the advice of the sound engineer who built most of the panels, we left a lot of blank space so the room wouldn’t sound too dead.

For this project and the less then optimal room dimensions, it was the right move.

Thanks. I have pretty good dimensions, so may go with hardware and an area rug just to preserve flexibility.

SCAudiophile 02-04-2020 01:14 PM

As I said before on my post, your room looks amazing!

What brand of product is that in the middle and what model? I am referring to the wood sculpture diffusers between the Apertures.

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks..good Polish company (!)...thought they were familiar but was not sure. Saw and heard the results of their products in many rooms in Munich last May. They truly work as advertised...

SCAudiophile 02-04-2020 04:21 PM

One last question...of all their products, all the 1D, 2D and Skyscraper, how did you determine and / or calculate which was best for your room?

In Munich 2019, many rooms used the extra large Skyscraper units which come in pieces and weight many hundreds of pounds but the other rooms all used the 2D products for the most part. Wondering how you arrived at the choice of the 2D/19+1/120 QRD.

Thanks again...tried to send an IM but system would not allow it....
