Plinius SB301 in the house

My Plinius SB301 arrived today; I'll unbox it this weekend and post pics.

Maybe I'll use this to drive my new Aerial 7T's :scratch2:

Davkj 01-17-2013 10:50 PM

Should be a nice combo. In my demos Plinus worked well with the 7t.

Masterlu 01-18-2013 06:23 PM

Now the Plinius Tautoro is also here. :)

PHC1 01-18-2013 06:28 PM

The 301 Plinius amp will do a great job of driving those Aerial 7Ts! Might as well try that combo first since you already have them ready to go when the speakers arrive. Looking forward to your impressions Ivan. :music:

Good looking amp from all the angles. They sound just as good as they look.

I tried one of these a while back. Very high gain

Enjoy the amp
Cheers

Mine is Silver, I'll open it tomorrow and post some pics. :ok:

Grats Ivan!

Sent from my iPad Mini

Jamesie 01-18-2013 08:34 PM

Congrats Ivan!!

Very keen to hear what you think of the Plinius gear with the Aerial 7T's.

I currently have the Plinius Hiato Intergrated and am looking at upgrading my Dynaudio S3.4's mid this year and the Aerials are on the radar.

Enjoy!!

Paul

Masterlu 01-19-2013 02:36 PM

This gear is both pretty & heavy; taking a break. :sigh:

Ritmo 01-19-2013 11:04 PM

I'm a little late to this thread...Ivan where is this system going to be set up?

The amp looks stunning...

Watch your back man! Are you doing this solo?

Mike... This is a runaway System; I don't know where it's going yet ;)

I'll post the actual pics tomorrow, it is a gorgeous looking amp! Nah, I have LuJr to help me. :o

I always thought the SB300 was the 103 without the Class A mode.

Ritmo 01-20-2013 12:23 PM

Ivan - It is a very good looking amp. I've seen much higher priced components that don't look this good.

The SB-301 is more powerful. Puts out 310 wpc into 8 ohms.

Nice pics, Ivan! Here's mine in a pic from a little over a year ago. The Standby and Mute indicators have gotten bigger, but other than that they are identical:

Johnbr 01-20-2013 07:17 PM

It is to bad that it is not for sale here in Canada.

p59teitel 01-21-2013 01:43 PM

Huh. I'll have to figure out pic posting.

Johnbr, it is indeed unfortunate it is not available in Canada. On Revel Salon 2s, the SB-301 IMO absolutely smoked the Levinson 532H in terms of bass weight and slam, and dynamics (I might slightly prefer the Levinson for "small" acoustic or jazz combo music, but the Plinius sounds much faster and hits above its weight class.

As I posted on another thread in this brand section, it took a pair of Symphonic Line Kraft 250 monos to root the SB-301 out of my system. And I would say that the SB-301 shares many of the same qualities the Kraft 250s provide, albeit not to the same extent. That's pretty strong praise when a $10K or so amp can be compared to $30K monos!

p59teitel 01-21-2013 01:44 PM

But enough about me - Ivan, you got this bad boy hooked up yet?

Jamesie 02-05-2013 03:21 PM

Ivan,

Just wondering if you had any updates on the Plinius rig:D:D

Did you match it with the Aerial 7T's?

Cheers,

Paul

My first 7T's were sold before they arrived; I'm waiting on another pair. ;)

Plinius SB301 in another house

I bought p59teitel's SB301 from him a few weeks ago, and felt compelled to post on how magnificent this beast is. I needed an amp to drive a pair of the old Infiniti IRS speakers that combine a tendency towards brightness with impedance that drops as low as .75 ohm. The SB301 shows no signs of strain, and accomplishes the mystical feat of combining a relaxed and effortless presentation with tremendous detail. It truly does get out of the way and let the music shine through. If you're reading this thread because you don't know whether you should buy this amp, the answer is Yes!

Has anyone compared the sb301 to sa103?

I was curious myself between the sb301 vs the sa103. I've been thinking about upgrading to separates from my beloved 9200.

jdandy 05-05-2013 12:25 PM

Considering sb-301 for my Tad cr-1. They love power. I have only hear plinius class A amps. How is this a/B sound interns of soundstage width, sweetness and does it run hot.
Thnx Nick

Nick... You couldn't tolerate the heat; even at idle they are extremely hot. I couldn't. :(

p59teitel 05-21-2013 01:27 PM

The SB-301 does run hot and is a power glutton even in idle. Replacing it with Symphonic Line Kraft 250 monos resulted in a $20 monthly reduction in my electric bill - something I did not anticipate but was a pleasant surprise. They barely get warm even when cranked. I do miss the Plinius bass slam (overemphasis even?) a bit although the SL amps do everything else better.

Ivan, did you have your SB-301 down in FL? I can see where that might have been a mismatch climate-wise!

Yup, this was down in Florida; the SB-301 ran so hot in idle I thought something was wrong with it.

Ivan......It only takes one look at the huge heat sinks on the Plinius SB-301 to tell this amp needs plenty of cooling. There are many square inches of cooling surface in those fins.

Ivan, how did you like its performance (other than as a space heater, that is)?

It was a great sounding amp, but the heat made it a no go. :sigh:

I am waiting for a pair of speakers to arrive. The SA-Reference is going to be great for winter :)

I have to admit I was glad I had an entirely separate heating zone for the room my stereo is in when the SB-301 was in the house. Definitely helped with oil consumption even as it jacked up the electrical cost.

With an SA-Reference maybe the heat never would have come on, LOL.

Avocado 07-01-2013 04:32 AM

Dear all,
I am new in Plinius product, still at learning curve. I have a SA102 rated at 125W RMS. What not clear to me is that if all of this 125W power is Class A ? Or is it similar to Passlabs where first XX Watts are Class A and the rest are Class AB ? can anyone shed some light ?

Thanks

Thanks Kev. for the link... :music:

I have read thru... but seems unable to find then info I looking for. I found from other source that SA-Ref is rated 300W, but the Class A is the first 100W, then the rest is Class AB.

But for SA102, I couldn't find such info. If anyone else know the similar, please post. Thanks so much

afridi 11-25-2013 01:53 AM

Seriously thinking of going to a 301. Have a 103 right now. Anyone here listen to both and can comment?
