Sovtek 2A3's

FWIW, I bought a pair of these, GM matched, from Viva Tubes to use as daily drivers in my 45/2A3 amp and they are . Excellent for $119 a pair.

Yep...

Hello
I have JJ 6V6S tubes using a 5U4 rectifier in my Universal why do some of you use or recommend a 5Y3 rectifier with 6V6 tubes? What does this do to the sound? I am new just trying to learn.

I'm playing around with a mixed set of vintage tubes right now in my PSE.

Vintage Tung-sol 5881 paired with vintage GE 6L6GB. 1960s Westinghouse 6SN7GTB with an old RCA 5U4G.

The 5881 and 6L6GB are very close cousins.

The sound is pretty nice. Not the ultimate in top end or deep bass detail. But a nice warm bass, sweet midrange, smooth highs. Kind of a classic "tube" sound.

I lean towards liking more detail and bigger soundstage, but this combo has been nice listening to blues, folk, and just to lean back & relax.

The JJ's are 6V6GT and can be used with a 5U4G. The ST or Coke bottle-shaped 6V6G or 6L6G tubes are lower power and a 5Y3 or 80 rectifier should be used.

Why are the OPT so huge on that 45, I would think they would actually be smaller than a normal pentode ones because less power.

Are those OPT special?
