Dave... properly cared for cigars will always get better with age. I have some that are 20+ years old since I got them.

djwhog 03-05-2017 07:21 PM

Oh wow did not know that. All I know, which it very little about them is, except for the taste and smell of some very nice ones I have enjoyed from a big time collector buddy out in Calif. He has some serious money in it I know.

He says it is his wine cellar/stereo/car collection. Another fun hobby that can get costly but for those that enjoy another great pleasure.

I hate to tell him you have all of those :)

What is in the two tins? Looks like Dunhill Royal Yacht pipe tobacco on the bottom?

+1 on that for sure..proper temp and humidity will see them get better and better. 1999 to 2000 i picked up several different half boxes of pre-embargo Cubans from different labels from a collector in Overland Park KS. They were 42+ years old and on the list of the most amazing cigars i have ever smoked even after 4 decades!

crwilli 03-05-2017 07:48 PM

Outstanding collection Ivan! It's another push for me to get a bigger humidor so I can collect more than a hundred cigars at a time. Not thinking a walk-in but perhaps more of a credenza size.

The pictures made my mouth water.

Check Stabell and Associates out of Texas. Great humidors all the way up the scale!

Yes, pipe tobacco.

Masterlu 03-05-2017 08:16 PM

I have slowed way down; there was a time I would buy 3-4 boxes a month, just to stock up and let them age.

I don't think I have bought a box in over 5 years. I have many more boxes that I didn't photograph; I keep an excel spreadsheet for everything so I can keep track of what I have, when/where purchased and price paid. :)

Ivan, as long as you manage it, why would that be a problem?

Thanks Bart! Same here! When I came back I always check your posts to catch up on Vivid Audio developments. That's how I found out Vivid had a new top of the line.

Actually I always found your hyper organisation very inspiring. I get a bit more organised when I see some of your posts. Motivational examples of order applied to fun stuff, like audio systems or collecting.

Your posts with organisation tips / tactics / suggestions are always interesting and useful.

My wife and I will spend two days in Havana in April. I am looking forward to that experience. Not sure how much I can bring back or where to buy but will go for it none the less.

It has been a number of years since I have visited Cuba but my understanding is that you should buy them from the government shops and keep the receipt. If you do not have the receipt the cigars can be confiscated at the airport on the way out. This was done to cut down on black market activity.

I stand corrected if this in no longer the case but you should research the rules before buying.

crwilli 03-07-2017 10:20 AM

Interesting. I was only thinking about getting them into the US and never thought about Cuban issues. Silly me, it is still a communist country... thanks!!!

nicoff 03-07-2017 12:14 PM

I agree with Alki. In Cuba, the only way to be sure that you are buying the real thing is if you buy from the government owned stores. Plenty of fake cigars going around. And by the way, you are now allowed to bring Cuban cigars into the country without a limit as long as they are for personal consumption.

Thank you. Since we are getting there via a cruise liner (bringing our hotel with us!), we have excursions planned to visit a famous plantation / rolling factory and a large store in town.

Now I am wondering if the 100 stick limit is per person or per family? E.g. Can my wife and I each bring back 100?

I will dig into that. The Cigar Aficionado link doesn't mention that.

Yes, each of you can bring 100 cigars tax free. From the article:
"According to OFAC's website: "A traveler may include up to 100 cigars and 200 cigarettes in the $800 exemption from duty... Additional cigars and cigarettes may be brought into the country, but they will be subject to duty and Federal excise taxes. Excess amounts are subject to a 4 percent flat rate of duty."

That is the limit for ONE traveler (you). Your wife is another traveler. She is allowed the same amount.

crwilli 03-07-2017 02:39 PM

$100 worth of booze and $400 worth of tobacco

Jess 03-18-2017 10:09 PM

The only Cuban cigars I have had were Romeo and Juliets. Nothing compared to these! But I enjoyed them during my only trip to Italy, and they were delightful:-)
