I wore the first Rolex Explorer watch today.
It has a honey cone Dial, odd shaped hands, and I believe its a circa 1953.
Rolex sent it up a climb of Mount Everest. Depending what you read. Looks like, a 90 year old mans watch, but has been preserved perfect over the years. Bought new by another family member. Now I take care of it for the next guy! |
It sounds like a really nice item to have. Any chance you could post a picture?

Yes, pics please!

I have 3 Rolex`s. All 3 were given to me by family members. My father gave me his all gold President for my 40th b day and my cousin gave me his stainless/gold Submariner. Last but not least my ex wife gave me the all stainless Submariner which I almost daily.

Sorry, I do not know how to post pics, in threads.
I believe, that the watch was sold separate without a band, brand new. Can, I copy and paste pics? It looks just like a 90 year old mans Timex watch. On a side note: I have Rolex's watches that were never serviced that have held up forever, until current. Not sure I buy into the whole service the watch every few years deal. My serviced watches always, have problems, once the seals are broken, over the long years. Different service companies have been used. Official Rolex was the worst, in Switzerland. 5 Months there, and it came back, not right, so I just sent it out locally. |
I love Rolex's... most all of them...
Just never had one that would keep time. Seems like a watch should keep time... I would love to find a SS Sub that kept PERFECT time. |

I want to leave this alone...
Don't EVEN get me started on Brietling... Glad you have a good one... Worst watch I ever owned. |
Breitling has the best service department. I was sending mine in every few years to change faces. On the strap version they always replaced the strap at no charge. I dumped my Rolex's years ago and my wife has had to have hers in at least three times times that I can remember and they always nickel and dime the repairs. It still keeps crappy time. I guess you can find a lemon in every brand.

An off topic comment. I saw on FBI detectives that a John Doe was identified by his Rolex watch.

You have to wind a Rolex watch, along with just wearing it (self winding). If not wound, say once a month (manual), they do not keep accurate time. |

And they listen to McIntosh because they are stupid; right? It is pretty hard to criticize some things; Rolex and McIntosh are two of them. The criticism tends to reflect more on the critic than the item being criticized. |

Seriously!!!, my appologies :respect: |

1) My comparison concerning your claim is not a leap, but right on. "Rolex is the John Doe of Watches" Vs. "Only Doctors and Lawyers listen to McIntosh." Both statements are false. Both mischaracterize the brand and the consumer. I think they are very similar statements. One is not a leap from the other. 2) As for my question concerning Doctors and Lawyers "And they listen to McIntosh because they are stupid; right?" my intention was not to comment on your post, but to note the self defeating nature of the statement some make "Only Doctors and Lawyers listen to McIntosh," because since Dr.s and Lawyers are generally very intelligent, it is wrong to assume they are ignorant of audio gear, and therefore listen to McIntosh because they have more money than intelligence. 3) My statement "It is pretty hard to criticize some things; Rolex and McIntosh are two of them. The criticism tends to reflect more on the critic than the item being criticized" was not specifically directed at you, but to those who constantly criticize either Rolex or McIntosh. I had a guy who always tried to compete with everyone else around him, and was very insecure tell me once "Everybody has a Rolex." That is just a foolish statement that reflected more on him than Rolex. Sorry for the misunderstanding. No offense taken, none meant. |
What about the idea of a McIntosh anniversary watch made by Rolex.? ? ? :)

Individuality is unique in that the total peculiarity of each one's character distinguishes each of us from others. What is even more unique are the similarities each of us shares despite the individual peculiarities. So different we are, yet so much alike. Our desires are boundless, yet our needs are so common. It is the human condition.
|
The peculiarities that we each possess creates the desires that differentiate us. This is why some individuals choose to wear time pieces from companies like TagHeuer, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Breitling, Maurice Lacroix, Piaget, Rolex, and many other luxury brand wristwatches, while others enjoy more mainstream wrist watches from Seiko, Citizen, and Bulova. Others see no need for anything more than a Casio, Caravelle, or Timex watch. Some folks simply use the clock on their cellphone, and see no need for a wristwatch at all.
Fortunately, for all of us, this is what keeps life interesting and challenging. I am all for the differences. |

with a blue face plate that glows in the dark and a second hand that looks like a VU meter???? you might have something there :scratch2: |
Unlike some other watches, Rolex does retain value and moves up in price.
Their movements are not great (sloppy workmanship) compared to others, but have worked for decades. The lucky thing for collectors is most everyone, has heard of Rolex, which creates a demand and their price is within grasp of most people if you buy used. Other uber end watches, are not so well known by the public and not within $ grasp. Which makes for a tougher fire sale...to pay for college. An example, find a good deal/steal on a used Daytona Rolex, and you will have an asset, which will gain value as soon as you put it on your wrist. |

Sold new for circa $200 without band.
Looks like someones granddad watch but I like its history. Been in the family since day one, except the band. And it works perfect! Which is a surprise, as Rolex movements are not the cleanest, precision wise. |

Most Rolex's do not keep perfect time because people do not realize they have to wind them. You cant count on the auto wind up.
