Model Trains

2 Attachment(s)
I have an LGB train with 5 cars that go around the tree.
Anyone else in the model train hobby?

TommyC 12-04-2012 03:40 AM

I have a few Marklin train sets.

Vintage Pete 12-04-2012 06:25 AM

I'm interested in the hobby; I recently acquired an N scale set from my boss. The trouble is I really don't have the room to set up a layout. I like the HO scale the best but that's even more of a problem in terms of space requirements... :dunno:

Pete, you can easily put together a very nice layout on a 4x8 sheet of plywood !

Anyways, lifelong modeler here, presently modeling 'G' gauge, outdoors, live steam.

I'm in the process of constructing a small (O gauge) layout for the grandchildren that will be under the X-mas tree

A departed uncle of mine was an HO train enthusiast. His basement was filled with train supplied and layouts. At its peak when he was in his early 60's, it was about 20 x 20 feet. By profession, he was a dentist and carved and built his own trains and life-like scenery with open fields, waterways, cities and mountains. He had turntables and all sorts of train "garages" (I don't know what they are called in train lingo).

When we were kids, we loved to go down there and play with his trains. It kept us busy for hours. Of course, he didn't give us his deluxe hand made locomotives to use unless he was beside us, but his "second rate" trains were much better than I had as a youngster at home.

It's a great hobby. If I had the time, I might entertain doing it myself.

back in the day when turntables were utilized they were call a 'Roundhouse'....today with the absence of turntable it's simply an 'engine house'

tdelahanty 04-04-2013 08:56 PM

I have modelled HO and O, and collected N,HO,O. Currently my wife and I built and operate an O scale layout, mainly we operate Lionel TMCC and Legacy (digital remote control).
Some time ago I posted pics of our layout, buy can't remember what thread they're in.

Oh yes. Nothing better on one of our rare summer days than barbecuing, drinking beer and running live steam

Do I have train set? Yes. Do I consider myself a train set Aficionado? No. I have a cousin who is much more into train sets than I.

I have a secret desire to have a train set room. I have collected a few Marklin pieces in my younger years of which are all in storage. Another expensive hobby :)

Not so much a secret anymore, LOL. I had a fairly large train board my dad and I put together after getting the trains, cars, and buildings one Christmas. The buildings were in kit/model form and required assembly and painting. It took a while to do and was set up in the basement. I played with it for years and remember it fondly.

bachrocks 09-28-2013 04:24 AM

Doug, great post. Christmas memories revolve around trains and presents, inside, and "hoppin' cars" and ice skating, outside. My father had an O gauge set of Lionel trains from the 30s or 40s.

Every year, we'd put out our 4x8 dark green plywood table, lay down tracks, assemble the houses etc., and start the engine rolling. I dearly miss that feeling.

I dream of playing with trains again, as soon as I can get around to it.

Thanks,
ron

I loved the Hornby narrow gauge model railways. If I have a house designed in the future, i'd love to have a railway running around part of the house with perspex windows in the walls :D

Back in the 1950s I had a rather large set of American Flyer trains. Spent many a day enjoying them. They have been packed away and have not seen the light of day for at least 50+ years. Might be fun taking them out this winter:scratch2:

Clad 7 10-17-2013 07:34 AM

I have ~ 20 steam loco Märklin (3 rails, AC 16 V), and first: I love the "Big Boy"

Clad 7 10-17-2013 10:38 AM

If your space is too small: Märklin Z (1/220)
I have a circle runing on an old turntable.

Lost Bears (Tom) and I have had a little discussion regarding toy trains, collecting, etc. he asked for a couple of pics of my live steam that I operate in my back yard so here are a couple ......

SuperD 11-21-2016 07:09 PM

My Dad bought my brother and I a small LGB set when we were young and over a decade we packed our game room full of different engines, cars, model houses, gondolas, and even a small mountain. It had been in a storage unit for 20 years until we got it out to show my son a couple months back. Right out of the box it all worked flawlessly. I think my Dad loved showing it to his grandkids even more than my brother and I. I still love that set!

Now that is really cool.

Great trains guys including the live steam! Love trains! Used to have Lionel O gauge and other brands HO and collected brass Japanese HO. Then came the high end audio fix....😆

That is so cool! I love large trains, the bigger the better. Unfortunately my back yard is not big enough to do much of anything like that. But that may all change soon. We are looking at a large early 1900's country house on a little over 5 acres.

I put a couple of quick train pictures in a public folder. I am not a very good photographer. At this point most of my trains are packed as we are slowly getting ready for the move.

Interesting. But there is too little color. I prefer big colorful trains like these.

Cool but no way will that work with long cars or full size diesels like the big UP 44 . No big steam will fit either [emoji2] . Whoever set this up is very meticulous and patient!

My dad had an HO train set on a table about as long as I can remember. He built a very large table that had to be about 12x10 feet with a very intricate layout, mountains, tunnels, buildings, etc. Was always fun to play with it, and demo for our son when he was a boy. Sadly, he gave it away a few months ago as my folks begin downsizing and prepare to eventually move out of their home of the past 35+ years.

Wow....great memories! I always wanted something more than the remedial layout in the basement (no scenery or buildings just tracks and trains) but other things with my Dad that were even more fun and rewarding (music, big band playing, camping, etc..) always won out for time spent. No regrets!
