My $99 Vintage Receiver Find!!!

I've been looking for an old skool receiver for my shop/garage space to power some old skool Realistic Minimus 7 shelf speakers. Nothing really fancy, just a good solid unit.

I passed on some expensive Marantz (4335???) units and continued to shop.

While perusing eBay today, I came across this Yamaha CR-620 receiver and at the end of the auction, it was mine for $99!

Part of their "Natural Sound System" program in 1978, the CR-620 was about in the middle of Yamaha's receiver line, followed by the CR-420 and the anchor of the line, the CR-220.

Rated at 50W/CH @ 4 ohms (both channels driven) & 40W/CH @ 8 ohms (both channels driven); the unit appears to have sufficient power to drive a wide range of quality speakers.

I think the Minimus 7 speakers are rated at 40W X 8 ohms so that's not a bad match. But they may not be wired up to this receiver for long. There are a lot of other, higher quality, speakers out there to try and I'm itching to find a nice set of vintage JBL's!

Any speaker suggestions????

Looking forward to plugging this one in when it gets here!

Michael.......Looks like a really good score. That will make a nice shop system. Keep us posted as this vintage system grows.

wow such a nice find :)

congrats.. perfect choice... How about some old school AR speakers?

8 or 10" 3 ways?

Dave.......I like the AR speaker idea. A pair of ADS 710 might be nice, too.

Michael,

That's a really great looking receiver and should make an excellent shop system. A friend of mine had a Yamaha receiver with a Dual turntable and a pair of Large Advents back in the day. It was a rocker. :) Let us know how it sounds after you get it all in place.

Thanks, guys. I've been looking off and on for a nice, clean and cheap unit for the shop and this seems to fill the bill.

I'm looking for some small speakers. I ran across some JBL 2500's for around $25 so I've got a snipe on that auction. I kept the amount fairly low with only two small incremental bids if the auction exceeds my max bid.

This is gonna be a garage/shop system on the CHEAP for sure. :D

I also found some ADS L400'ss and can get them for around $60 for the pair. I know they, like the JBL 2500's, are two way speakers.

Thoughts?

Michael.......A pair of ADS L400's would be a nice match for the Yamaha receiver. If they are in decent shape, $60.00 is a steal.

I used to own a pair of those when I had a tech sa 800 back in the day and then upgraded, they had nice open highs. clean speakers for that price...

I've decided to bid on two sets of speakers...the aforementioned JBL 2500's and the ADS L400's I just found.

If I end up with two sets of speakers I'll be glad to audition both of them with the receiver then I'll flip one set! :D
