Transformer hum

Does anyone experience transformer hum on their Shindo preamp or Mr. T.? Matt said slight humming is normal, depending on the time of day. It also depends on the shelf the units are rested on. Some shelf can amplify the hum, which is totally understandable.

For me, hum is the same in terms of loudness or quality regardless of time. The Mr. Ts. are only audible within 2 feet. I can deal with that. But, the Aurieges hums is quite loud. I can clearly hear it at my listening position. With all 3, the humming is annoying at quiet passages.

I hear NO hum on my 15-year-old pre and power amp.

Contact Jonathan Halpern.
Pretty sure this is totally fixable.

Toroid power transformer? if so, maybe the old slight DC offset on AC line causing it?

...older devices with non-toroid power transformers are typically less likely to have audible hum caused by DC offset on AC.

Email sent. I'm tired of mailing things back and forth though. It will be my 3rd time if I have to return anything.

Tommy,

That stinks! Have you tried a cheater plug and reversing the polarity? Just curious.

Tommy,
I know how you feel. I've sent my Monbrison back to Matt twice. It's a pain,
especially since I go to Point Roberts to ship.

I bought a couple of Humbusters to try and get rid of my subwoofer hum.
You are welcome to try them to see if they would help.
I'm in North Delta

Sorry to hear that Tommy. That must be really frustrating.
An idea would be to give up the Auriege option for your preamp and try an other Shindo preamp.
There might be a problem with your electric installation. Matt surely tried it in his place before sending the Auriege back to you. I suppose that you tried to plug the preamp in other places of the home ? Do you have this transfo hum while nothing is connected to the Auriege ?
Well, at least, you probably have one of the best audio dealer in the US so you will be treated beyond expectations.
Relax ! You're in good hands.

I've heard mechanical transformer noise from several Shindo pieces. This was largely corrected by switching outlets and was due to electrical issues. Currently I hear some noise from my Mr T, very slight, and only noticeable from 2 feet.

Yes, on the Mr. T. It's a huge transformer and hearing it 'work' from a foot or two away is normal. Again, room acoustics play a part. Typically, they are just slightly audible - household lighting, environmental surrounds and household 'murmur' is typically louder, if that makes sense.

On the preamp, it should be quiet. It may have no been handled appropriately during shipping and I would be happy to check it out.
Something easy for you to check is tightening down the transformer mounting screws, which are accessible from the bottom of the power supply chassis on your preamp.

It was silent at my shop. It's very robust and well built equipment, but things happen.

Please email me for further discussion.

Don't want to mislead anyone. The Aurieges was returned only once due to hum to one of the speakers. The other return was for a used defective Shindo IC.

Thank you for the offer. Could you post some links to the device?

Matt has been awesome. I feel bad emailing him with all my problems.

I will try to disconnect all cables to see if hum persists. The weird thing is, the hum was only slightly audible at 2 feet before I got the Mr. T. Actually, I've never noticed it for the past 2 months since I got the Aurieges. It happened when the Mr. Ts. arrived.

I unplugged the Mr. T. from the outlet and plugged the Aurieges direct into a different outlet. Same hum. I think the hum is amplified by my cabinet too. When I lift the Aurieges slight, hum decreases.

The Shindo power cords are 2 prongs. I did reverse the plugs with same result.

The Mr. Ts. hum very slightly. I don't expect a huge transformer to be dead silent. I'm OK with that.
