C70 or C2600 or MP1100

This question ties in to the lemon thread. At this time I am at a 100% failure rate either fresh our of the box or within a few months. These problems have always been quickly resolved by my dealer with replacement units so I know they will make it right. All replacements have worked without issues.

This time the failure is on my C70. I have just purchased a Linn LP12 and one of the reasons I choose the C70 is to make use of the MC phono stage. Also to keep everything analog. For digital duties I have a D1100 the works with the C70. Amp is a MC152

So my replacement choices are:
  1. Stick with C70 and get a new replacement
  2. Move to C2600 and sell D1100 and continue to use the MCT450
  3. Move to MP1100 and use digital out to D1100
  4. See if I can find a reissue C22
  5. Something else - if so what?

While I like the sound of my equipment - my faith is wavering a bit.

Thanks for any suggestions.

You need to get better power in your house first...

Not saying new hardware doesnt fail, but it doesnt fail like you are describing.

Sorry to hear about the failure(s). Seems odd indeed.

Regarding preamp, I would recommend leveraging your misfortune for a screaming good deal on a C1100. Keep the D1100 too.

+1 the c1100 is a very good preamplifier.

Power is actually OK here. Each of the pieces in question had a different issue
  1. MC152 - Left meter did not work out of the box when 1st turned on. Otherwise everything worked. Dealer confirmed issue and replaced.
  2. D1100 - Front panel had no green illumination otherwise it worked as expected. Dealer confirmed issue and replaced.
  3. C70 - Everything seemed fine. Just discovered the MC phono preamp issue. No signal passes. Line level inputs work as expected. The other day it turned on, worked but no green illumination from panel. In fact nothing worked on front panel except the power button. When dealer tested phono input via MM the unit emitted a loud test tone like sound when the volume was set past a given level. Other than that no sound from phono inputs.

Each time dealer could reproduce problem and fixed the issue. No other equipment in the house has any issues.

Good idea on C1100. I will ask but the difference might be a bit steep. Would have to be a really good deal. Also asked them to see if I could get a C22 which is what I wanted in the first place. It is still on the web site but the home office has said there are no more to be purchased.

Seems like really bad QC at McIntosh.

I’m sitting on a new C22 myself, just in case. ;)

In that case, I would go for the C1100 if you can swing it, or go the C2600 route. If you end up selling the D1100, I may be interested in getting it from you though.. :)
