Pass Labs Xs series amps ...

Anyone thinking about upgrading to the Xs series amps? Has anyone heard the Xs amps yet? Opinion?

Still-One 08-13-2012 06:40 PM

Joe
I haven't heard the Xs amps yet. Hope to in the future. I am a fan of Pass amps and came close to pulling the trigger once.

Jim

Thanks Jim,

There were HIGHLY recommended to me and I know of a few people receiving them this or next week. I can't wait to read their impressions.

BurmePassDart :dunno:

I am just trying to keep the conversation going

I think I need less friends :(

Why not try tubes if you are looking to add another amp to the collection?

My stereo is on waaaaaay too much for tube amps. At some point in the furture, maybe, but not now. Plus it's a big commitment.

Were you known as Mikey to your friends in your younger days.

I think we need a Pass Labs tab in the "Manufacturers Forums". :D

I second that! A beautifull brand like Pass deserves its own tab:D:D:D

I agree.

I want a pair of xa200.5's, but have serious concerns about roasting myself out of the room! I'm wondering if they run hotter than my 2301's??? Anyone know?

joeinid 11-05-2012 07:04 PM

Mike,

I have to believe the XA200.5's power consumption total of 1400 watts far excedes the MC2301's, but I believe your room and separate AC should take care of the heat.

jdandy 11-05-2012 07:11 PM

Joe.......A pair of MC2301's draw 1320 watts at full rated output. At lower volume levels it is less, and at idle it is minimal.

Thank Dan. I could not find that anywhere. So just sitting there the Pass amps consume more than the 2301's at full output. I believe Mike is unlikely to crank his 2301's continuously so they will run cooler. He has a big room and it's AC controlled. He should be fine if a little warmer.

Joe.......

Mike.......

That was a typo! It's 1320 watts, not amps. Obviously I was daydreaming.

Sadly, we knew what you meant.

jdandy 11-05-2012 11:23 PM

Mike.......I just performed an ammeter test on one of my MC2301 amplifiers. At idle with no signal, a single MC2301 draws 180 watts. Peaking 3.0 watts on the amp's output meter the MC2301 draws approximately 202 watts. Peaking 30.0 watts on the amp's output meter the MC2301 draws approximately 260 watts. I didn't go any louder because 30 watts output into the Anniversario's is rocking the room. This just gives you an idea of what a single amp draws. Both of my MC2301's are powered from a PurePower 2000, so the combined total for both amps is 520 watts current draw when the amplifier outputs are peaking at 30.0 watts. This means the PurePower 2000 is just loafing along, even at the loudest volume I listen to.

Thanks Dan. You're one step ahead of the boys at Mc....but you usually are (remember the MEN220)?

joeinid 11-05-2012 11:35 PM

Mike,

How often does the fan run and how loud is the fan noise on the Classe CA-2300?

It runs constantly and is very quiet from the seating position. You can just barely hear it if you go up next to it and its silent in the room.

joeinid 11-05-2012 11:52 PM

Thanks. The fans may bother me :( but your room is much bigger than mine :)

The infamous "Mikey" was the grandchild of my next door neighbor "back in the day". Little Mikey was obnoxious and not as a youngster allowed anywhere near Grandpa's LP's.

Somehow I'm sure that's significant, here......... (or not!)

Thanks for the history.

If I wasn't totally satisfied with my Momentum's I think the only amps I would have considered would be either the Xs amps or the TAD's. (Now if I still owned MBL speakers their amps would be on the list too)

Hi Jim,

I bet the Momentums are wonderful on your Wilsons. I loved my XA100.5 but was thinking about moving up to the XA160.5's for a more even-handed sound. I know the Xs amps are on another level. I love my Dartzeel but would like to have another set of amps. My VAC will mate to a pair of Pass amps and my Dartzeel will be getting the Dartzeel preamp, if my 911's ever sell.
