What Live Music Are You Listening To Tonight

I didn't see a thread like this (it might deserve a sticky), so I thought I'd start one. Tonight I'm seeing Solas at the Dosey Doe Big Barn in The Woodlands, Texas. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r9YRRMRA0E]SOLAS_AM I BORN TO DIE - YouTube[/ame]

Thanks Bart, I'd like to see this thread used as a tool for concert reviews, tour updates, etc.

Good idea Chris. Most of the time we have been posting in individual threads that are long forgotten.

I'll try to give a short review from tonight to kick this off.

An absolutely inspiring evening of Irish music and musicianship by Solas, playing many of the songs from their latest album "Shamrock City" before jamming on some traditional reels. Because the Lumineers were playing just down the road tonight, the audience for Solas was very small in this club (not more than 40), but the few of us that were there were treated to an intimate musical experience in a space that's known for its "perfect acoustics". (Pictures taken with my iPhone give you an idea of just how intimate this performance was). Please take the opportunity to see them if you can on this tour - it was a real treat. Highly recommended!

Last night we went to hear James Carter (saxophones) with the Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio (Hammond B3, Guitar, Drums) at Jazz At The Bistro in St. Louis.

It is amazing how four people can fill a room with so much energy and intensity, and that is exactly what they did. James Carter opened with a rousing and virtuoso display on Tenor Saxophone, with equally great solos from the others. During the course of the night he featured his Tenor, but also a baritone, soprano and a contra-bass saxophone. First time I ever heard a contra-bass live, and it is quite a magnificent instrument.

It was a great set lasting about 80 minutes. When the band members left the stage, Lonnie remained and did an encore on his...cane. Yes, it turns out his cane is an electronic slapstick thingamajig. He soloed on that as the other band members eventually made their way back to the stage for an extended encore.

After the show Lonnie remained to chat with people and sign autographs, so we went up to meet him. He got the biggest charge out of the fact I have a huge vinyl collection of jazz. When I told him how many 50/60s Blue Note LPs I've collected he got an ear to ear grin on his face. He kept telling Missy he now has to outlive me so he can have it. Seriously, it was so much fun to jest with him.

What a great show. I am really glad I got to attend.

For me some of the best experiences with live music have come from going to small clubs and chatting with the musicians afterwards (often at the bar). From Buddy Guy at the Checkerboard Lounge, to Bruce Hornsby (also in Chicago, before he got famous), to the surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd at a bar in Jackson Hole (they left me in their wake). I'm usually in awe. Thanks for the report!
