Doge 8 - Outstanding Preamp!

Really loving the sound of the Doge 8 preamp! I'm in agreement with the StereoMojo review of the Doge 8--superb tube line stage sounds highly transparent, accurate timbres, exciting dynamics, excellent soundstage, and extremely low in noise and distortion, adding only a little tube sweetness to the sound, high quality cabinet and parts and comes with excellent tube phono stage and remote--WOW, what more could you ask for--one of the best buys in hi-end audio!

Note: I am using Telefunken 12AT7s in the line stage and Mullard 12AX7s in the phono stage.

Yeah Roger, a truly amazing pre.

My only wish is that it had a stepped attenuator like my old Quad 44 pre. Maybe an ELMA or even an ELMA knock-off. :D I think it comes with an Alps Blue Velvet, right?

Did you add the tube shields or are they factory installed? The Doge8 Clarity doesn't have tube shields.

...I'm seriously looking at getting the Doge 6 Clarity CD player.

Cheers,

Niles, I don't know which Alps attenuator it is. The tube shields came stock on the base model Doge 8 I have.

I currently have JAN GE 12AT7 in the line section, but want a little warmer sound, so will be trying Mullard CV4024's that just arrived!

What tubes do you have in the 12AT7 slots?

Update: I went with Telefunken 12AT7s that have softer, more distant sounding high frequencies (the Mullard CV4024s are too hot in the highs for my small office, near-field listening).

Roger, about the 12AT7 -- the Doge 8 Clarity that my buddy has is running the Mullard 12AT7WA / CV4024 in the line stage (I don't own a Doge 8 but have really enjoyed listening to his). I can't say if the Mullards are better than the JANs because when he got the pre it had the Mullards already installed.

When I get the Doge 6 Clarity CD player, I'll probably run the JAN 12AT7WC and Mullard 12AX7 since I have a pile of these in stock. I think it comes with Tung Sols for both types.

Cheers,
