I never cared for button volume controls. My MAC4300V has them, and they are difficult to make adjustments with, particularly small adjustments.

Dan with cj it is far easier than when I had my Mac C46 or C2300 to make small adjustments. I use the remote for 99% of any volume controls and with the Mac, making small volume adjustments was difficult and very easy to overshoot a couple of db. A nice volume control on the unit is great, but I have yet to find one on a remote control.

cj has 100 steps and each step is .7db which is perfect for small adjustments. you can adjust each volume step individually or hold on a little longer and it goes a bit faster.
The control side involves a microprocessor whose only function is to switch relays on and off. When changing volume or balance, when choosing an input, or when muting, you can hear the relays switching inside the unit.

VTL and Spectral also have copied off this relay volume method
