Hi Ivan - just heard from Victor Khomenko and he tells me he is having a problem registering in order to post in the BAT forum. He is getting a message that states the "administrator will get back to him".
Thanks.

I have not posted much. I am more of a reader here and have been busy over the past few months, but would like to give my 2 cents. I am very happy to see this as a forum.
I have been using all BAT equiptment for somewhere around 15 years. I have had the pleasure of meeting Victor and his crew at his shop over these years, and I have to say that it was a honor to meet them. They are very friendly, honest and the most stand up people you will ever meet. I am proud to own their products.

Has anyone upgraded their preamp?

Not me. But frankly I am afraid to go hear the new stuff. Makes me want to buy gear. :D

This BAT forum is really quiet somehow. I still use my 6200 for my SACD multi channel music session which is directly hooked up to the OPPO 105 for simply setup ever. Have yet to decided a BAT preamp since most of my gears are Mcintosh for two channel. Enjoy both.

I am beyond satisfied with my BAT gear. The odd consequence is that I don't have "upgradeitis" and, thus, no new BAT gear to discuss. :)

How about tubes. What's everyone using 6H30? Sovtek or NOS?

Just finished installing the latest generation Nichicon electrolytic caps, at this level of parts quality I prefer the EH Gold 6H30 tube, the Gold Lion reissue 6V6 tube and the reissue Tung Sol 6SN7 tube.

I have a soft spot for BAT based on my history with one of the original principles.

I love the sound.

It's great to find a dedicated spot to talk with other BAT guys.....It'll definitely cut down on my emails and phone calls to Geoff, who has been great to deal with.

I've known Geoff Poor for about 40 years and he's always been a pleasure to work with. He's extremely knowledgeable, personable and always willing to share his honest opinion when it comes to audio. Further he really makes an effort to cater to each customer's unique needs.

Seems like a great guy to know for 40 years. I know...he really went the extra mile with me. I started by sending him an email and instead of just giving me a quick response, he called my cell to talk with me in person. I'm a true believer that not all "watts" are created equal.

I just picked up a VK-30 in very good shape. It had a clean bill of health from BAT in 2017, I have the receipt. But it has very loud tube noise. On my efficient Tekton Moabs (listed as 98 dB but I think closer to 95) the static is so loud it is easily heard from the listening position, which is 12 feet from the speakers. It is so loud it is unusable as is. It has 6 Sovtek 6922 tubes now. I am debating on replacing the tubes and hoping the tube noise goes away, or returning it (I picked it up for $1,000 - not a bad deal).

Any thoughts?

Thanks

(I would make this its own post, but I can't. Maybe I need 5 replies or something first....)

What amplifier are you using it with.

Mark Levinson No. 532H.

The problem was the tubes. Replaced all 6 and "tube noise" is next to zero. It sounds very nice now.

*** On a side note, the forum rules say you need 10 posts to be able to create new threads. I have 12 post and I still can't. I can not even message the Mod to ask about it. The only thing I can do is reply like this...
Can someone message a mod for me?

Thanks.

Excellent. I was using an amp with single ended inputs when I first acquired my VK-3i and it was noisy. It wasn’t long before I found a VK-200. The balanced connection made all the difference. What tubes did you end up with? I am using Tungsram 6922’s. They are very nice and don’t break the bank.

I bought a 5 yr old REX2 preamp. What XLRs would you recommend to connect to that DAC and to the amplifier?

Brad - glad your problem is solved with the new tubes. Of all the preamps I've owned over the years the VK-30 is the one I miss the most. Terrific sounding/looking piece of gear. Made me into a fan of the 6922 tube.
