Much better than the original Maple or Graphite finish.

I've been informed the Elipsas in the photo are not Elipsas -- they were a one of a kind made for the Munich show & have Stradivari drivers.

It has been brought to Sumikos' attention to ask SF (again) if they would consider finishing them in the Red Violin for an upcharge. It's doubtful there will be a quick response -- SF works real slow when it comes to changes.

Soooooo, back to Graphite for me.

Bob, they are Elipsas. I have seen them and heard them. In fact one can order them here as well! Are you sure Sumiko is not having your goat simply because they have not yet decided whether to carry them?

BTW, SF factoary is on holiday until end August!

Bob the information from your dealer may not be correct regarding the picture posted by Howie. The drivers in the speakers in Howie's picture appear to be identical in appearance to the drivers in my Elipsa's. The woofer between the Strads and Elipsa are the same, only the Strads have 2 and the Elipsa only 1 per speaker. The midrange and tweeter in the Elipsa picture posted by Howie does not look any different then mine. The Strads midrange and tweeter configuration is different in appearance to the model in quesiton.

I’m only reporting what the US distributor is relaying – they were sent the photo & that is their reply regarding US availability. I learned from living overseas for 18 years of my adult life that there are certain items available in Europe and not Asia, in Asia and not USA, etc. Whether Sumiko wants to offer that finish in their distributorship is up to them – they have the cards in this game.

Sumiko has been asked the question regarding applying the stain finish on the Elipsas as like the Strads several times and have inquired with SF in Italy. SF answered “no” each time. Sumiko advised they would ask again --

David, it’s almost impossible to deduce the driver type by the photos posted by Howie. You have good eyes to deduce a 1/4 inch size difference between the tweeter in the cell-phone photos.

Bob,
It's amazing how some goods are available in one place, but not another, especially as appears to be the case here. It's usually, as is the case here, not as much about the absolute availability of a product, but about certain product attributes.

Howie,
Those speakers - whatever they are - are gorgeous in the red. Thanks for sharing!

Along those lines, it's this way in the US as well. Go shopping for a $3K+ refridgerator -- for instance store "X" has a model similiar to store "Y", same brand, model name, yet the model # is off by a digit or two. Store "Z" has another, identical to the two mentioned in all features, appearance, EnergyGuide specs, but the model number has an "A" added for instance and a substantial price difference.

Now back to the topic.

Sorry Howie --SUMIKOs' Sales and Marketing Director is a staunch supporter of buying in the US and not importing from overseas -- he infact states so in so many words -- buy from Italy or Europe/elsewhere overseas and bring them into the USA -- and have issues -- you'll get no support from us (after verifying w/the factory serial numbers, etc).

Sumiko has some really tight dealer/customer tollerances. As from a popular high end web site:

"WARNING

IF A SONUS FABER PRODUCT IS:
1. Directly imported by you from another country, OR
2. Purchased directly from a dealer OVERSEAS, OR
3. Acquired by you from an UNAUTHORIZED North American based re-seller,
ALL SONUS FABER PRODUCT WARRANTIES ARE NULL AND VOID

In other words, you will only be provided a North American warranty on Sonus faber product purchased from a SUMIKO authorized Sonus faber dealer.

IN ADDITION, SUMIKO WILL NOT SUPPLY PARTS AND/OR SERVICE FOR ANY SONUS FABER PRODUCT WITHOUT PROOF OF PURCHASE FROM A SUMIKO AUTHORIZED DEALER IN NORTH AMERICA.

For that kind of $$, a good deal isn't the most important, IMO.
