Default New revolution in photography about to occur?

this technology will be coming to point and shoot cameras, cell phones and expensive dSLR's -- no focusing necessary since EVERYTHING in the image is in focus and it can be used for moving objects at much faster shutter speeds than formerly possible OR much lower light situations than formerly possible

try out the gallery in the link below -- merely click on one part of an image and it will come into focus, then click on a different part of the image and it will come into focus

the images start out something similar to a raw image (closest analogy I can make) and are processed with the original image being untouched using proprietary software -- when processed, the photographer will decide what is to be in focus to create a JPEG image

the cost of autofocusing will go down as will the cost of digital sensors to capture low light or the cost of fast lenses since they will become un-necessary -- brokeh is totally at the mercy of the photographer

just a guess -- but when the complicated and expensive autofocusing systems are removed, it might be possible to produce optically superior lenses for less money for the high end dSLR's -- perhaps even image stabilization could be eliminated (just a guess)

the first point and shoot cameras will be out before the end of this year and will evolve over the next few years into the professional arena

IF I correctly understood the presentation on Engadget podcast, 3D is easily possible too...

Wouldn't it be wild if a $150 point and shoot camera will match the image quality of a $10,000 top of the line dSLR with professional lens?????

Not exactly sure but it almost seems like this idea came from what's called "stacking" used in macrophotogtaphy where the depth of field is so shallow that multiple exposures are takes at various focal distances and then "stacked" together digitally to create an object with a bigger depth of field.

So if I had to guess, multiple fast exposures are taken at various focusing points along the way and combined or can be viewed one at a time like in the interactive example above. This would probably eliminate the precise and slightly time consuming precision focusing.

I am not 100% I get it. Clicking on parts of photo allows that part to come into focus just like an autofocus system. How much into focus depends on the aperture and focal length.

Do you mean that you will be able to do this but with a cheap lens and camera? That would be useful but you will never get the quality or flexibility enjoyed by a DSLR lens

The advantage as I see it, is that in the recorded image, depending upon f/stop and DOF that results, the entire image is in focus BUT, when it is processed, the part that is in focus can be selected. This would mean high quality lenses without the expensive IS or autofocus and that would reduce the price of the lenses dramatically. That could mean the same quality images with a $100 lens as currently taken with a $1000+ lens. The camera/lens combinations would be less expensive and lighter in weight and no way to take an out of focus picture. Yep -- the entire concept is pretty bizarre and I will believe it when I see it and even then will be unlikley to give up my Canon L lenses any more than I would give up my McAmps for some new class D or hybrid class D amp that weighs 5 pounds and allegedly puts out the same watts... (one tough thing about aging is the reluctance to accept radical change )

Crazy, I know that model!

This tech looks pretty cool... See where it goes and how much it costs...
