Damn....I had a recording of Wanda Landowska doing the Bach Goldberg Variations on harpsichord in Paris during the war. Now I can't find it. Argh!
I spent last night hoovering my Bruno Walters... does this count?

For those who are not familiar with Wanda Landowska, she was the one to return the harpsichord to performances of Bach keyboard music earlier in this century.

I have that particular disc that you mention It was notable for being the only Goldberg Variations on the market for a long time, until a certain G. Gould recorded his breakthrough 1955 performance that popularized the work. It then became a smash hit and everybody else jumped on the bandwagon.

I am normally a fan of Landowska, but not a fan of her horrible Pleyel harpsichord. It is an abomination

There were others in between but you are right that everything changed with the popularity of the GG disc.

I really like Gieseking's Debussy, but then he was one of the great interpreters of both Debussy and Ravel.

Claude Debussy, "l"Oeuvre de Piano"
Walther Gieseking, piano
EMI Pathe Marconi References 4545653 (5 LP)

currently playing Disk 1
Suite Bergamasque
Pour le Piano
Estampes
Children's Corner
recorded 1953

The copy I had was a reissue on EMI Pathe Marconi References that I acquired in the 80s. Wish I knew where it got lost. I am out a box of records, probably as a result of the move into the house I now live in.

I need some opinions. I think I'm going to look for a vinyl box set of the Schubert Symphonies. Recommendations?

A very beautiful version of Grieg's Piano Concerto.

I got nuthin'... literally, no Schubert whatsoever. Sorry.

Maybe I need to remedy that? (good Lord, where does it end? )
