Default C50 Firmware Installation Notes

I asked Ivan to hold back the firmware until I had a chance to try it myself, since I didn't want to share something that bricked peoples' preamplifiers. I installed it last night and got it working with minimal trouble, so you can be confident that at least it doesn't cause your C50 to explode.

When you unzip the package and look at its root contents, you see 3 directories and a readme file. Take a moment to look at the readme carefully because the order of installation for the update is important. The package contains 2 firmware updates: A System Module, and a USB Audio Module. Be sure to install the System Module first, followed by the USB Audio Module. If you're familiar with updating things like digital cameras, your GPS, iDevice, a Blu-Ray player or surround processor, the update procedure may seem a little unusual, so here's a head start.

The contents of the update package are as follows:

File: C50-UpdateReadmeFirst.pdf
This is the readme file for the complete update. Be sure to read this first!

Directory: 230032_C50_V2.00_WIN7
This directory contains the C50 System Firmware Update Guide and an executable oddly named "MLIC50V200Update.exe.exe" that installs the firmware onto your computer. The procedure is covered in the Guide, but in general, the idea is that you first install the firmware onto your computer as you would with any other Windows application. You then run this application with the C50 connected and in setup mode to install the update to the C50 itself.

Directory: 230026_C48C50_USBAUDIO_V2.10
This directory contains the C48 and C50 USB Audio Firmware Update Guide and an executable named "setup.exe" that installs the firmware onto your computer. Like the System Firmware Update, you first install the firmware onto your computer, then run the application with the C50 in setup mode to update the C50 itself.

Directory: mcintosh_usb_driver-1.0
This directory contains documentation and yet another install executable for something called "USB Audio Driver Version 1.0". I was confused by this at first, since the updates above install System Firmware 2.0 and USB Firmware 2.10. I haven't looked at it too much yet, but this application appears to be a utility with a control panel that allows you to configure latency, sample rate and whether ASIO hosts can change. It's worth noting that this utility appears to have been written by Centrance.

After I installed the firmware update, I connected the C50 to my MacBook Air. The OSX MIDI app now shows a full range of sampling rates for the C50, ranging from 44.1kHz to 192kHz and bit depths from 16 to 32. The C50 worked well with iTunes, but locked up periodically with Decibel, requiring the C50 to be power cycled. I suspect this has something to do with the "ASIO hosts may change" setting.

I completed the update quite late last night, so didn't have a chance to do much listening. But my initial impressions with music up to 176.4kHz was good. Redbook material does not seem to exhibit the pops and clicks any more, but I will need more time listening to confirm.

Note: After some brief experimenting this morning, enabling the "ASIO hosts may change" setting in the "USB Audio Driver Version 1.0" utility seems to cure the problems I initially experienced with Decibel locking up the C50. I'll continue to explore this and report back. But with this setting enabled, I have been able to bounce back and forth between iTunes and Decibel without any problem. Decibel is able to change the sample rate according to the track being played and the current sample rate is correctly shown on the C50's front panel display. It appears that the C50 must be power cycled for this setting to take effect.

Thank you for posting this.

Hopefully people can get this working under Kernel Streaming and WASAPI with the same amount of ease as the ASIO driver.

Too late...
It appears that I have bricked my C48
I put the thing in update mode, per the instructions, then discovered that the C50 update is not compatible with the C48..
couldn't get it out of update mode, so I pulled the power plug
Now it won't power on, or off
All red lights above all buttons are on

Sully......sorry to hear this I hope everything works out for you. Have you tried resetting your C48 back to it's default settings?

Press both the PROCESSOR and OUTPUT 2 buttons until the front panel display indicates "FACTORY RESET" then release the buttons....seconds later the Front Panel Display will indicate "FACTORY RESET,-COMPLETE

There is no processor button on the C48...
I spoke with Ernie @ Audio Classics, who spoke with Chuck @ McIntosh...
They will have to get under the covers on Monday to bring this back to life

So, a heads up to other C48 owners, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPDATE YOUR C48 WITH THIS CODE

Be aware that the posted update may cause operational problems according to McIntosh. It is NOT an official release of the final version of the update.

I received a response from Charles Hinton of McIntosh to my inquiry regarding when an update to the C48 firmware may be available. He stated:
"Master Lu posted a C50 update this morning, this is not the official one and a customer messed up his unit with it about 1/2 hour ago, the real up date will be out next week, please wait, I will email all registered owners when it is ready"

Ron Cornelius of McIntosh posted a similar message in another forum today advising owners to await the official version of the update to be released by McIntosh in order to avoid potential operational problems.

I was pleased to find McIntosh personnel were exceptionally responsive to my customer service question. Receiving a response from Charles Hinton himself to my email in less than 3 hours on a Saturday represents exceptional customer service.

Yes, I think we would all agree that McIntosh has been exceptionally responsive to the USB issue on the C48/50. The very flower of exceptional customer service.

I guess it was good I didn't have time to do the update. My parade was just rained on.
