McIntosh technical support sent me this reply when I asked about the update:
"The update is very complex and we are asking customers to do it through a McIntosh dealer."

Given the potential to brick your C48/C50 if the update does not load properly, I can understand McIntosh's rationale for dealer involvement in this update.

Hi,
Will it be done while you wait, if you take it to the dealer?

More like no sound. I'll need to get the v1.0 file so I can reload it and then try the update again. It's a PITA!!!

McIntosh technical service reports the update by the dealer should take 15 to 30 minutes. I would expect most dealers would be willing to perform the update while you wait, especially if you make an appointment to do so.

It could be worse. I had an update of the engine control firmware for my car which took 5 hours while I waited. Typically, once the update begins you must complete it for the unit to operate properly.

Thanks Mike, I will a call to my dealer for an appointment, it's probably a good idea. Hope they don't keep me there too long, mcintosh mvp891 is temping. I might get carried away while waiting.

You must have a fancy car and they have to fly the tech to do it.
