You know you have a good amp when you could care less about an upgrade to it. I'll be running a 601 with my new Thor. I considered a new 1.2kw but thought it was too much amp. Progress marches on. So do prices. The "new" 1.2 kw will be considerably more expensive than the one now in production and will be similar to the 601. While there was significant improvement over the 501 with the 601 making it reasonable to upgrade, IMO the current 1.2kw is an amp for the ages.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll wait it out. I was thinking of upgrading my 601's. Although I love them,I think the 1.2 k's are built considerably better. WBT terminals etc etc. I'd hate to lay out that kind of cash and be outdated in 6 months.

You will be considerably more money if you do. Any "upgrade" to a 601 type amp will be more expensive. The 1.2kw was built using the "old" tecnology to sound as good and compete with the "new" Mac amps with the new output transistors. One of the things to note about a 1.2 kw is its extremely high efficiency. It is a more efficient amp than a 601 that uses the new transistors. In addition, I just had my first experience with the new Mac binding posts dealing with my new 601. While my reaction was generally positive, if I had my choice I'd definitely choose the old type posts used on the 1.2kw's.
