James Martini was born January 14, 1902, in Greenridge, Illinois. During his late teens Martini worked as a auto mechanic for an auto dealership in Detroit. He left home when he was 21 after the death of his mother, and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. While working as an engineer for a radio station, and also working for Baldwin loudspeaker company, he met his future business partner, Ken Decker. The two moved to Los Angeles where they began a business manufacturing loudspeakers. The company was named Lansing Manufacturing Company, but only after James Martini legally changed his name in 1927 to James Bullough Lansing, at the suggestion of his future wife, Glenna.

Twelve years later, Decker was killed in an airplane crash, and Lansing suffered financial difficulties without his business guidance, ultimately selling his business to Altec Service Corporation, and was renamed Altec Lansing. Lansing worked as VP of Engineering under a five year contract, and promptly left Altec at the contract deadline to form his new company, James B. Lansing Sound, Incorporated, which eventually became JBL.

James Lansing was known to be an innovative engineer, but a poor businessman. As a result of deteriorating financial conditions and personal issues, James B. Lansing took his own life. He hanged himself in his home in San Marcos, California on September 24, 1949.

Such a strange story of the man who started the great company we all know as JBL.

James would have left this earth long before now of natural causes had he chosen to stay, but would have been able to be a part of, and witness the incredible success of his ideas, and his company.
