Back in the day, if you had a pair of JBL L300 Summits you were king of the audio club. They are great speakers.

The Summits were on my list for a long time, but too poor when they were new to even consider the purchase. I see these for sale every now and then. They are still commanding a good price.

When did those come out? I had pair of the big Olympus speakers and then became side-tracked by McIntosh and then panel speakers in the mid 70's.

My mid 60's Olympus had the same driver, an LE85. They cost considerably more than the summits because of the enclosures and were discontinued in I think 1974.

Yes, they do indeed to this day fetch a good price. Believe it or not, in all my years being a JBL nut, I've never had the opportunity to audition a pair. I'm well aware of their nearly legendary status however, with the 136A low frequency driver and the 375 compression driver with its horn/lens configuration. I've read many testimonials to its performance from owners on the Lansing forum.

I don't know that the L300 would blend as nicely into my main system as does the L220. The L300's rather short and squat cabinet concerns me as to image height and I like the L220's nearly ideal height of the high frequency driver.

Another legendary system in the JBL line to come along later, right after the L220, is the L250, later to become known as the 250Ti. This was a tower system, and to this day when I see a pair I ponder how these would do in my system. These would blend nicely, I think. I did have a chance to audition these, and was impressed. The L250 (or 250Ti) are the only JBL systems I'd consider replacing my L220's with. Well, okay.....or the K2S9900's!
