I would just get the Apple Extreme router. I've had several and sold them to upgrade to the newer apple routers. Rock solid and fast. Buy it from the Apple Education store online.

My recommendations from previous research:

1) Cisco Linksys E4200 2nd Version, or

2) D-Link Amplifi HD Media Router 2000 DIR-827

Both are dual band, and good for home use. Cisco as you can imagine is more expensive but feature rich.

Hope this helps.

I would recommend Cisco. I have used their equipment for years and always found it to work well. (reliable also)

The previous recommendations will all work fine. If you have a large living area and you can't locate your wifi router centrally, you may end up with a coverage issue.

That's what happened to me. I run a Buffalo Air Station-G (specifically because it is a high-power beast), but even with that, it's tough cutting through three floors and 100ft to get to my wife's MAC.

So, I picked up this Diamond300 range expander from Amazon. Super fast and easy to setup/install... and works great.

Cheers

The Apple I bought last year is the first router I've owned that I haven't been forced to manually reset from time to time. Fantastically stable!

I just bought an Airport Extreme for my office today. I have had several routers and , apart from having to restart them from time to time, they also seem to bug when wifi is used in parallel to ethernet.
I was told that the Airport extreme is stable for both use, simultaneously.
And as I'm sold to Mac....I believed it.
Will see if it's true or not...

+1. I've had to replace linksys almost every 12 months, that is when I wasn't resetting them or getting range extenders. The Apple is solid, easy to set up and allows a guest network. And maybe other routers have this feature now but mine did not - a USB port for creating sharing a USB drive or printer. Note though - while you can use an attached USB drive for backup, ala time capsule, Apple really doesn't support that.

I have a Netgear WNDR3300, has worked flawlessly for years, Mac and PC.

N & G, four wired and I forget how many wireless capable.

I do live in a small house and only have one wireless computer.
