Question Front end performance.

OK, now that I once again have a analog and digital source, TT and CDP, I'm seeing a big difference between the two. My previous system as some may remember consisted of McIntosh gear, C220 pre, MCD201 CDP, and MC240 tube amplifier (current gear see list below). With the McInosh set up the differece between the CDP and TT performance was very close making be believe my TT was more capable than it actually may be. So either the phono stage of the C220 is that much better, the phone stage in the Luxman is not as good as the C220's, or the Luxman D-05 is a much better performer than the MCD201.
Nothing has changed with the VPI TT set up so I'm sure the difference is not here. So of course I'm concerned and would like to close the gap in performance. So what would the logical steps be to determine the weak link in the chain? I'm thinking my cartridge might be the place to start as the Grado is of the MM variety. Perhaps a MC unit is where I should go next. As always your input is valued and requested

Don, are you saying the TT's performance is not as good as the digital?

Currently no, the TT's performance is nowhere as good as the CDP.

Sounds like the phono stage in the Luxman is not as good as in the McIntosh?

Or your digital side may now just be that good. I am having the same problem - most of the time my digital front end sounds better than my turntable.

Jeff, could you expand on that? Do you mean the Luxman is the reason? I am confused because wouldn't the TT go through the Luxman, too?

The D-05 is a really good player and is much better than the MCD 201.....my opinion here and the phono side in the luxman is also very good and would say its equal or better than the mac phono.....so I would be looking at the cartridge, I know the grados well and find the MM really bland sounding, again my opinion.....this is not to be a bashing but my experience with the gear mentioned.....its always a YMMV, to each thier own kind a thing!!

VPI HW19JR with Audioquest PT-9 tonearm with Grado Reference Sonata1 and VPI SDS. The Luxman L590Aii's phono stage is MM/MC.
